Part 2 of 3

“How’s Lily behaving? You know how she gets when I’m not around.”

“She’s with me.”

A pause.

“Did she tell you something?”

“We talked.”

“Oh, Daniel. Please don’t tell me you’re falling for her little stories again. That girl can turn a spilled glass of milk into a family crisis.”

I gripped the steering wheel.

“When are you coming home?”

“Tomorrow evening. Mom isn’t feeling well, so we’re leaving early.”

I knew what that meant.

She was coming home to get ahead of whatever Lily had told me.

“Safe trip,” I said.

Then I hung up.

I didn’t take Lily back to the house.

Instead, I drove to our neighbor’s home.

Mrs. Evelyn Brooks was seventy-four and had lived next door since before Hannah passed away.

She opened the door, looked at Lily, and immediately stepped aside.

“Come in, sweetheart.”

After Lily settled into the guest room, Mrs. Brooks brought me her old phone.

“I’ve wanted to talk to you for months, Daniel.”

She showed me a video recorded through her kitchen window.

Lily was standing alone in our backyard.

Inside our house, people were singing around a birthday cake.

Madison leaned forward and blew out the candles.

Mrs. Brooks swallowed.

“I didn’t know what was going on, but I knew it wasn’t right.”

There were other videos.

Lily carrying garbage bags late at night.

Lily sitting on the back steps before sunrise.

I sent copies to Michael.

That afternoon, he confirmed that the bank had opened a fraud investigation and placed restrictions on further suspicious withdrawals. He was also preparing emergency family-court filings to protect Lily.

Then he asked me about the power of attorney.

“Daniel, there’s a witness signature on this document. Did you recognize it?”

I hadn’t looked carefully.

I opened the photograph.

Witness: Andrew Mercer.

My younger brother.

The man who came to every Thanksgiving dinner.

The uncle who hugged Lily and called her his favorite girl.

I stared at his name until the letters blurred.

That evening, another message arrived.

It was from Madison.

If Lily’s with you, please tell her I’m sorry.

A second message followed.

I have recordings. I can prove what Rebecca made us do.

Then a third.

But please don’t let them send me back to my mom.

I looked through the window at Lily, sleeping beneath Mrs. Brooks’s spare quilt.

For the first time, I understood that the trouble inside my house was bigger than one cruel stepmother.

And tomorrow, Rebecca was coming home.

PART 2 — THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN’T MINE

Rebecca arrived Saturday evening with three rolling suitcases and a suntan.

Her mother, Lorraine, followed her into the house carrying shopping bags. Denise came next, and Madison trailed behind them, looking at the floor.

I was waiting in the living room.

The blue folder lay on the coffee table.

Rebecca stopped when she saw it.

“Where’s Lily?”

“Somewhere safe.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means she’s not here.”

Rebecca set down her purse.

“Daniel, don’t start this nonsense. I’ve spent the entire flight listening to Mom complain about her knee, and I’m not in the mood for another one of Lily’s performances.”

I pointed to the couch.

“Sit down.”

She folded her arms.

“Excuse me?”

“We need to talk about the money you took from Lily’s education account.”

Her eyes flickered toward the folder.

Then she sighed.

“Oh, good grief. Is that what this is about? I used some money for household expenses. You’re gone three weeks at a time, Daniel. Somebody has to keep things running.”

“You spent thousands on a Florida vacation.”

“My mother needed a break.”

“With my daughter’s college money?”

Rebecca gave me a look of open contempt.

“Don’t you dare make me sound like some stranger stealing from your precious daughter. I’ve cooked for that girl, cleaned up after her, and put up with her attitude for years. You send money home and think that makes you Father of the Year.”

“You left her alone and made her wash clothes in a bucket.”

“Oh, please. She’s sixteen, not six. A little housework isn’t going to ruin her life.”

“Why wasn’t she allowed to use the washing machine?”

Rebecca rolled her eyes.

“Because she throws one dirty shirt in and runs a whole cycle. I’m teaching her not to waste money. Something you might appreciate if you were ever here to pay attention.”

I opened the folder.

“And this?”

She glanced at the forged authorization.

“You signed that.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“Well, I certainly didn’t put a pen in your hand.”

“You used my signature to access Lily’s money.”

Rebecca leaned forward.

“Be very careful, Daniel. If you’re accusing me of a crime, you’d better have more than your daughter’s little sob story.”

“I have bank records.”

“Then call the bank.”

“I already did.”

That wiped the smile off her face.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Rebecca looked at the blue folder again.

“You went through my things?”

“I was looking for Lily’s phone. You had it locked away.”

“Unbelievable. I spend four years holding this family together, and you come home early and start rummaging through my bedroom like I’m some criminal.”

“Why did you arrange to send Lily to a residential facility?”

Denise looked up sharply.

Rebecca’s mouth tightened.

“Because your daughter needs help. She’s been acting out for months, and you’re too busy playing truck driver to notice.”

“You mean the same daughter whose birthday you gave to Madison?”

Madison’s face turned pale.

Rebecca snapped toward her.

“Don’t you say a word.”

I looked at Madison.

“You can speak if you want to.”

Rebecca stood.

“Absolutely not. You are not turning my family against me in my own living room.”

“It’s Lily’s home, too.”

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

“There it is. Lily’s house. Lily’s money. Lily’s feelings. What about everything I’ve sacrificed? Do I get a say in anything around here?”

I picked up the folder.

“You’ll have an opportunity to explain yourself to the investigators.”

Lorraine gasped.

“Investigators? Daniel, have you lost your mind?”

“No. I’ve finally started paying attention.”

Rebecca stepped toward me.

“You have some nerve. You disappear for weeks, leave me to raise a girl who doesn’t respect me, and now you want to play the hero? If Lily has been filling your head with lies, she’s going to regret it.”

I stood.

“You won’t be speaking to her tonight.”

“I’m her stepmother!”

“And I’m her father.”

Rebecca stared at me.

For the first time since I’d met her, she seemed uncertain what to say.

THE BROTHER WHO SIGNED

I didn’t stay to argue.

Michael had advised me to avoid further confrontation, and I followed that advice. I left the house, returned to Mrs. Brooks’s, and called my brother.

Andrew answered after the third ring.

“Hey, Dan. Everything okay?”

“I found your name on a document giving Rebecca access to Lily’s education account.”

Silence.

“Andrew?”

“Where are you?”

“Answer the question.”

His voice dropped.

“Can we talk in person?”

An hour later, Michael and I met him at the attorney’s office.

Andrew looked exhausted. His hands shook as he held a paper cup of coffee.

“I owe some people money,” he said.

“How much?”

“Almost sixty thousand.”

He’d accumulated gambling debts and borrowed from friends to cover them. Rebecca had discovered the problem and offered to help him.

In exchange, Andrew agreed to witness paperwork bearing a signature he knew wasn’t mine.

“She said you’d never notice,” he whispered. “She told me it was money just sitting there.”

I stared at him.

“That money came from Hannah’s life insurance.”

He lowered his head.

“I know.”

“It was for Lily.”

“I know, Dan.”

“Did you know Rebecca was mistreating her?”

Andrew didn’t answer.

I leaned forward.

“Look at me.”

He finally raised his eyes.

“I saw things. Lily always looked tired. Rebecca was hard on her. But I kept telling myself it was none of my business.”

“You came to her birthday party.”

He began crying.

“I should’ve said something.”

“Yes. You should have.”

Michael placed a legal pad in front of him.

“Andrew, if you’re willing to cooperate, I can help you arrange to give a statement. But you need your own attorney, and you need to tell the truth.”

Andrew nodded.

Before I left, he caught my arm.

“Dan, I’m sorry.”

I pulled away.

“Tell Lily someday. When she’s ready to hear it.”

Back at Mrs. Brooks’s, Madison was waiting on the porch.

She had a backpack beside her feet.

Her cheek was red, and she’d clearly been crying.

“I didn’t know where else to go,” she whispered.

Mrs. Brooks opened the door and brought her inside.

Madison explained that Denise had discovered her messages to Lily and slapped her during an argument. She’d left the house after Denise threatened to take away her phone.

“I have recordings,” Madison said. “Rebecca told me to be mean to Lily. She said if I didn’t, Mom would make me move back in with her boyfriend.”
