Why Prince William and Kate Middleton declined first ever official royal role for Prince Louis

At just seven years old, Prince Louis has already caught public attention for his cheeky personality — and now, he’s been offered his first ever royal role. But despite the offer being perfectly suited to his interests, the young prince had to turn it down.

Louis, the youngest child of the Prince and Princess of Wales, is growing up alongside his siblings Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince George, 11. While all three have made appearances at major royal events — from Wimbledon and England football matches to King Charles III’s coronation — none have yet taken on official royal duties.

That nearly changed this week when Louis was invited to become patron of the World Conker Championships — a playful honour inspired by his well-known love of collecting conkers.

Organisers of the quirky British event reached out to Kensington Palace after learning of Louis’s “conker craze,” which Kate Middleton had recently mentioned during a visit with U.S. First Lady Melania Trump at Windsor Castle.

During the engagement with a group of Squirrel Scouts earning their “Go Wild” badges, the Princess laughed about her son’s hobby, saying:

“We keep finding conkers in cupboards, in his bed — conkers everywhere! He even puts them in his toy trucks and plays with them.”

Delighted by the story, the World Conker Championships extended an invitation for Louis to become their youngest-ever patron. However, his parents respectfully declined, explaining that Louis is still years away from taking on any formal royal role.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson humorously told The Telegraph:

“We really appreciate the invite, but currently Prince Louis is ‘conker-trating’ on his studies.”

For those unfamiliar, the World Conker Championships is a beloved annual event where competitors battle using conkers — chestnuts on strings — to crack each other’s nuts. This year, 256 participants from nine countries, including Japan, took part in the competition held in Peterborough earlier this month.

While Prince Louis may have missed his chance to become Britain’s youngest conker champion, there’s no doubt he’s already mastered the art of winning hearts.
