“How could you possibly know that?”

His answer made the room feel colder.

“Because the company attempting to purchase it appears connected to accounts already under review.”

Everything suddenly lined up.

The changed code.

Florida.

The humiliating phone call.

The convenient buyer.

The unusually fast closing.

I whispered:

“He wanted me angry enough to sell.”

Agent Cole didn’t confirm my theory.

He didn’t have to.

What My Cameras Heard

Blake returned the next morning, much earlier than expected.

My driveway camera recorded his SUV arriving shortly after six.

Corinne climbed out behind him.

Blake entered using the code that had rejected me.

Dana and I watched remotely from her kitchen.

He went directly to the study.

He pulled open cabinets and began searching through files.

Then Corinne entered.

“Where’s the blue folder?”

“I can’t find it.”

“You said everything was ready.”

Blake threw several folders onto the floor.

“She wouldn’t sign anything.”

My heart began pounding.

Corinne folded her arms.

“You had months to get one signature before the baby arrived.”

Blake shook his head.

“Lydia reads everything. Her attorney reviews everything.”

Corinne’s reply changed the way I saw our entire marriage.

“Then you should have married someone less careful.”

A few minutes later, Blake’s younger sister, Brooke, entered.

She stopped when she saw the papers.

“Did Lydia find out about the trust?”

Everyone froze.

Blake turned toward her.

“What trust?”

Brooke immediately realized she had said too much.

Corinne ordered her to stop talking.

But Brooke snapped.

“This was supposed to be handled months ago. Locking her outside with a newborn was the stupidest thing you could have done.”

Then federal agents entered the room.

Blake backed away from the desk.

Corinne stood perfectly still.

Just before the camera feed was interrupted, Blake looked toward the lens.

Then he said:

“Lydia still doesn’t know about the other little girl.”

I stared at the screen.

Dana stared at me.

Neither of us spoke.

The Five-Year-Old Nobody Mentioned

Her name was Sadie.

She was five years old.

Two days later, Agent Cole brought me a photograph.

Sadie’s mother, Meredith Shaw, had worked in accounting for a businessman connected to Blake’s financial network.

She had died in a highway accident four years earlier.

Since then, payments for Sadie’s care had moved through accounts connected to Corinne.

Investigators had another reason for contacting me.

Blake might be Sadie’s biological father.

I stared at the photograph.

Brown curls.

Serious eyes.

A stuffed dog tucked beneath one arm.

“Blake had another daughter?”

“We’re confirming the relationship.”

Jocelyn asked:

“Why keep the child hidden?”

Agent Cole explained that Sadie’s existence connected Blake to financial relationships he apparently did not want lenders, investors—or me—to examine closely.

I should have felt angry at Sadie.

Instead, all I saw was a five-year-old girl who had been hidden because adults considered the truth inconvenient.

“Where is she?”

“Temporary care outside Charlotte.”

I looked at Nora sleeping beside me.

“I’d like to meet her.”

Three days later, Sadie walked into a family-services room wearing a pale-blue cardigan.

She looked at Nora.

“Is that the baby?”

“Yes. Her name is Nora.”

Sadie nodded.

“Grandma Corinne showed me her picture.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did you see Corinne often?”

“Sometimes.”

Then Sadie asked something I will never forget.

“Are you mad at me?”

I leaned forward.

“No, sweetheart. Why would I be mad at you?”

She stared at her shoes.

“Grandma said Daddy had a real family now. She said I shouldn’t cause problems.”

I felt Dana turn away behind me.

I kept my voice steady.

“Sadie, children are never problems. And you should never have to disappear just to make adults comfortable.”

She looked at Nora again.

“Will she know I’m her sister?”

The test hadn’t confirmed anything yet.

But I knew what answer that little girl needed.

“She’ll know who you are.”

Sadie hugged her stuffed dog.

“I’d like somebody to know.”

What Was Inside the Blue Folder

Two weeks later, I returned to my house accompanied by Jocelyn, Dana, Agent Cole, Nora, and—with permission from her caseworker—Sadie.

The house looked unfamiliar.

Blake’s belongings had been removed.

Corinne’s family portraits were gone.

The study cabinet stood open.

Agent Cole handed Jocelyn a blue folder.

Inside were copies of documents bearing imitations of my signature.

The proposed trust would have transferred control of my home, several investment accounts, and future assets intended for Nora into a structure connected to people in Blake’s financial circle.

Jocelyn slowly looked up.

“Lydia, this was never only about your house.”

I understood.

“They were trying to reach Nora’s future.”

Sadie suddenly spoke.

“Grandma talked about papers with my mommy too.”

Agent Cole crouched beside her.

“What do you remember?”

Sadie rubbed the ear of her stuffed dog.

“Mommy said she wouldn’t sign. Grandma got angry.”

Nobody moved.
