Part 2 of 3

“He didn’t just leave me,” I whispered. “He was preparing to make me responsible for his mistakes.”

Adrian nodded.

“That’s what the evidence appears to indicate.”

The Plan I Refused to Rush

My father wanted to confront the Wexlers immediately.

But I asked him to wait.

Spencer believed I was a struggling woman with no influential relatives and no money to challenge him.

I needed him to continue believing that until our lawyers had secured the evidence.

I allowed his attorney, Martin Phelps, to deliver the proposed settlement documents.

I reviewed them carefully but did not sign away my legal rights.

Instead, my attorney prepared a response while Adrian continued investigating.

Meanwhile, Spencer and Sloane were planning an extravagant celebration at the Pembroke family’s estate in Newport, Rhode Island.

The event would introduce their baby boy to friends, investors, and business associates.

It would also announce a major partnership between Wexler Capital and Pembroke Development.

The arrangement was supposed to bring three million dollars into Spencer’s struggling company.

Without that money, he faced serious financial trouble.

Then Adrian discovered something extraordinary.

The bank holding Spencer’s most urgent business loan was controlled by an investment group owned by my father.

I looked at Charles in disbelief when he explained the connection.

“You own the bank?”

“Our company holds a controlling interest through one of our subsidiaries.”

For the first time, I understood how completely Spencer had misjudged the family he thought I came from.

Still, I didn’t want special treatment or an unlawful advantage.

I asked my father to let the bank’s independent compliance team examine the suspicious transactions through its normal procedures.

Within days, the bank identified serious discrepancies in the collateral records and issued a formal demand for clarification and repayment.

Spencer suddenly needed the Pembroke family’s money more desperately than ever.

And he still had no idea I knew.

The Celebration That Was Supposed to Save Him

Four days after my twins were born, Spencer stood on the marble terrace of the Pembroke estate.

Nearly a hundred guests had gathered beneath white canopies overlooking the ocean.

Sloane wore an elegant ivory gown and held baby Carter while photographers captured the perfect picture of their new family.

Spencer smiled for the cameras, but his hands were trembling.

His bank had requested immediate financial explanations, and the company’s future depended on completing the Pembroke partnership.

Sloane noticed his anxiety.

“Stop looking so nervous,” she whispered. “My father won’t invest in a man who looks frightened of his own company.”

“I need him to approve the transfer today,” Spencer replied.

“Then give him a reason to trust you.”

A few minutes later, Sloane’s father, Richard Pembroke, stepped forward to announce the partnership.

Guests raised their glasses.

Spencer reached for the pen that would finalize the agreement.

That was when three black SUVs arrived at the entrance.

The music faded as the vehicles stopped near the terrace.

My father stepped out first.

Then I emerged beside him, wearing a tailored deep-blue dress and a light coat.

Adrian followed with a leather briefcase.

Two professional caregivers accompanied my twins, who were resting safely in a double stroller.

Every conversation stopped.

Spencer stared at me.

“Laurel? What are you doing here?”

Sloane looked furious.

“Who invited her? Security, please escort this woman out.”

But Richard Pembroke had already recognized my father.

His expression changed completely.

“Charles Ashford?” he said in disbelief.

My father looked directly at him.

“Good afternoon, Richard. I believe you know my daughter.”

The Woman They Thought Had Nothing

Spencer looked from my father to me.

“Your daughter?”

I stepped forward.

“Laurel Ashford Bennett. That’s my full name, Spencer.”

His face went pale.

My father was one of the most influential shipping executives in the region, and his business interests extended into banking, real estate, and international logistics.

Spencer knew the Ashford name.

He simply had never connected it to his wife.

“You told me your family was ordinary,” he stammered.

“I told you I wanted an ordinary life. You never cared enough to ask about anything else.”

His father, Theodore Wexler, approached with an angry expression.

“Whatever your family owns, Laurel, you still signed financial documents. You can’t simply walk away from your responsibilities.”

Adrian opened his briefcase.

“Mr. Wexler, an independent examination has identified serious irregularities in those documents.”

He presented the relevant findings.

Several signatures attributed to me had been flagged as inconsistent with authenticated samples.

Other records showed transactions routed through companies associated with Sloane.

Adrian explained that the evidence had been referred to the appropriate financial authorities.

Richard Pembroke examined the documents, his expression growing increasingly troubled.

“Sloane, why are there transfers from Wexler Capital into accounts connected to our property company?”

Sloane looked at Spencer.

“He told me everything was legitimate.”

Spencer tried to speak, but his father interrupted.

“This is a misunderstanding. Our attorneys will explain everything.”

I shook my head.

“Then let them explain it to the investigators. I’m not here to argue about paperwork.”

I glanced toward the double stroller.

“I’m here because there’s something Spencer never bothered to learn.”

The Two Children He Never Expected

One caregiver gently moved the stroller closer.

Spencer looked inside.

His expression changed as he saw the two sleeping babies.
