‘Raise That Baby by Yourself—I Never Want to See Either of You Again,’ My Boyfriend Said Before Disappearing Without A Trace… Hours Later, the Doctor Delivering My Son Suddenly Dropped His Gloves, Started Crying, and Said, ‘The Man Who Abandoned You Is…

Part 2 of 3

The nurses exchanged confused glances.

Olivia struggled to sit higher.

Fear flooded her face.

“What’s wrong?”

No answer.

Dr. Brooks slowly removed his glasses.

A tear landed on the baby’s blanket.

“Doctor…” Olivia whispered.

“Please tell me my son is okay.”

He nodded immediately.

“He’s healthy.”

She exhaled.

Then she noticed something far more unsettling.

The doctor was crying.

Not politely.

Not discreetly.

He looked like someone who had just found something he thought was gone forever.

The Name He Never Expected to Hear Again

Dr. Brooks carried the baby toward Olivia with extraordinary care.

His voice shook.

“May I ask you something?”

She nodded cautiously.

“Who’s the baby’s father?”

The room became strangely still.

Olivia hesitated.

She hadn’t spoken Ethan’s name in months.

Finally she answered.

“Ethan Brooks.”

The doctor’s face turned completely white.

One nurse instinctively reached for his elbow.

He barely noticed.

He whispered the name once.

As though testing whether it was real.

“Ethan…”

Olivia frowned.

“Do you know him?”

He closed his eyes for several long seconds.

When he finally looked back at her, he appeared twenty years older.

“He’s my son.”

The words seemed to stop time.

Olivia simply stared.

She honestly wondered whether the medication had made her hallucinate.

“Your… son?”

He nodded.

Another tear slipped down his cheek.

“That birthmark.”

He looked down at the newborn sleeping peacefully.

“Every firstborn boy in my family has been born with that same crescent beneath the left ear.”

Olivia looked at her son.

Then back at the doctor.

Nothing made sense anymore.

Dr. Brooks slowly pulled a worn leather wallet from his pocket.

Hidden behind his driver’s license was an old photograph.

A teenage boy stood beside a smiling woman outside a lakeside cabin.

The teenager laughed with his arm around his mother’s shoulders.

Even younger…

The resemblance was unmistakable.

The same eyes.

The same jawline.

The same smile Ethan had before fear changed him.

Olivia covered her mouth.

Dr. Brooks stared at the photograph.

“My wife, Diane, died three years ago.”

His voice cracked.

“She spent the last decade hoping Ethan would come home.”

He swallowed hard.

“He disappeared after a terrible argument between us. He changed his phone number. Moved away. Refused every letter I mailed.”

He looked back at the sleeping newborn.

His grandson.

A child neither he nor Diane had known existed.

The room remained silent except for the baby’s soft breathing.

Finally Dr. Brooks stepped closer to Olivia’s bed.

His eyes were full of grief.

But also something else.

Resolve.

“I can’t change what my son did to you.”

He gently placed the baby into her arms.

“But if you’ll allow me… neither of you will ever be alone again.”

Olivia looked down at the tiny boy sleeping against her chest.

Everything she believed about her future had changed in less than five minutes.

She had entered the hospital believing her son had no family except her.

Now, sitting beside her bed, was a grieving grandfather who had just discovered the grandson he never knew existed.

For the first time since Ethan walked away, someone wasn’t offering sympathy.

Someone was choosing to stay.

And outside the delivery room, Dr. Brooks quietly made another decision.

He would find his son.

Not to punish him.

To make him face the family he had abandoned.

A Photograph Across the Table

Three weeks later, Dr. Nathan Brooks parked outside a weathered roadside motel on the outskirts of Asheville.

The neon vacancy sign flickered in broad daylight.

The manager recognized the photo immediately.

“Yeah. Room twelve. Quiet guy. Pays one week at a time.”

Nathan knocked once.

No answer.

He knocked again.

The door finally opened.

Ethan stood there, unshaven, exhausted, and wearing the same guarded expression he had carried the day he left home years earlier.

The two men stared at each other.

Neither spoke.

Finally Ethan sighed.

“If you’re here to tell me Mom would be disappointed…”

Nathan interrupted quietly.

“Your mother already knew who you could become.”

He reached into his coat pocket.

Instead of a lecture…

He placed a single photograph on the small motel table.

A newborn wrapped in a blue blanket.

Tiny fingers curled around an adult’s thumb.

Beneath the baby’s left ear rested a delicate crescent-shaped birthmark.

Ethan frowned.

Then his face drained of color.

“…No.”

Nathan looked directly at him.

“His name is Mason.”

Silence.

Ethan picked up the picture with shaking hands.

His thumb traced the baby’s tiny face.

“Olivia had him?”

Nathan nodded.

“Three weeks ago.”

Ethan swallowed hard.

“Is… is he healthy?”

“Perfect.”

Relief flashed across Ethan’s face before guilt replaced it.

Nathan leaned back in the worn wooden chair.

He never raised his voice.

“You ran away from me years ago.”

A long pause.

“You can keep running from your past.”

Another pause.
