Queen of Hearts: Sweet moment Kate Middleton holds hands with a 100-year-old veteran during Remembrance events

A touching pictures from Remembrance events has captured the Princess of Wales sharing an intimate, heartfelt exchange with a 100-year-old veteran — a moment that resonated deeply with royal fans.

On Tuesday, Kate Middleton made an emotional solo appearance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire for Armistice Day. Leading the nation in the traditional two-minute silence, the Princess paid tribute to those who lost their lives in conflict.

Dressed in a bespoke black Catherine Walker coat dress and a Jane Taylor decima hat, the Princess listened as Poet-in-Residence Arji Manuelpillai recited A Sonnet for Us All — a poem she personally commissioned to reflect themes of connection, remembrance, and shared humanity.

But for the Princess of Wales, who has long championed the healing power of community and social bonds, the most meaningful moments came afterwards, when she spoke with veterans.

One scene in particular warmed the hearts of observers: Catherine kneeling to clasp the hand of Donald “Bill” Redston, a 100-year-old WWII veteran who served during VE Day and VJ Day. With a radiant smile, she asked him how he manages to stay so healthy. His answer delighted her — he once ran marathons, including the London Marathon at 65 and the New York Marathon at 66.

Kate then shared her impressions of the Arboretum, telling him:
“When I think I haven’t been here before, but there’s the National Memorial and all the personal stories I’ll take away today. It’s a special place.”

As she rose to leave, the Princess thanked Mr. Redston for his stories and said how lovely it had been to meet him. Laughing, she added, “And I’ll keep fit! Your lesson is for me to keep fit!”

Earlier this year, in August, Kate joined Prince William in marking the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, praising the “courage, sacrifice, and resilience” of those who served. The couple shared a joint tribute:
“We owe an enduring debt to the generation who gave so much. Lest we forget.”
They signed the message with their initials — a personal touch from the royal couple.

While Kate spent Armistice Day meeting veterans, Prince William delivered a powerful video message to schoolchildren as part of the Royal British Legion’s Remembrance Assembly. The annual event included the two-minute silence and was held in partnership with the National Literacy Trust.

Speaking alongside JJ Chalmers and several WWII veterans, William encouraged young people to connect personally with remembrance.

“When we remember, we connect with service in a personal way,” he said. “We learn from the courage of others, and we carry their stories so they are not forgotten. It’s not just about the past — it shapes who we become.”

He added that remembrance teaches empathy, resilience, and responsibility:
“When we wear a poppy or pause for a moment of silence, we are saying, ‘Thank you. We have not forgotten, and we will not forget.’”

Reflecting on his own military service, William continued:
“I have seen firsthand the dedication and duty of the Armed Forces. Coming together for Remembrance is vital to honour those whose service protects us — both those who came before and those serving today.”

“Their memories matter, their lives matter, and they remind us to be respectful, kind, brave, and thoughtful every day.”
