Queen Camilla Is Moved To Tears During D-Day Celebration Before Being Criticized For ‘Rubbish’ Gesture

Public interest in the royal family has always been especially intense when it comes to its women, and Queen Camilla has often been at the center of that scrutiny.

Camilla Rosemary Shand was born on July 17, 1947, in London. Her father, Bruce Shand, was a British Army officer, and her mother, Rosalind Cubitt, belonged to a prominent aristocratic family. In 1973, she married Andrew Parker Bowles, with whom she had two children, Tom and Laura. The couple divorced in 1995.

Camilla and King Charles III’s relationship began in the early 1970s, but both went on to marry other people — Charles famously marrying Princess Diana in 1981.

After Diana’s death in 1997, Charles and Camilla rekindled their relationship and later married in 2005 in a civil ceremony. She became the Duchess of Cornwall and, despite widespread criticism due to the history surrounding their relationship, she gradually earned public respect through her dedication to charity and royal duties.

Stepping Forward Amid Health Crises

In early 2024, the monarchy faced significant challenges when Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III would undergo hospital treatment for an enlarged prostate. After he was later diagnosed with cancer, Queen Camilla immediately stepped up, taking on an increased number of official duties.

During this difficult period, Camilla’s resilience became a subject of admiration. At the 80th Anniversary of D-Day in June 2024, she showed rare public emotion, though the following day she faced criticism over her adherence to royal protocol.

Praise for Her Role and Resilience

Queen Camilla received widespread recognition for her composure during this time. Royal correspondent Charles Rae called her a “remarkable asset” to the monarchy, despite once being labeled “the most hated woman in Britain.”

“There’s no question about it, she stepped into the breach,” Rae remarked. “She’s got everything on her shoulders with what’s going on, and she’s taking on even more work. Everywhere she goes, she has a cheery smile… She has proved to be a remarkable asset to the Royal Family, given the allegations that at one time she had bread rolls thrown at her in a supermarket car park.”

Royal author Angela Levin echoed this, emphasizing Camilla’s unwavering loyalty to King Charles. Levin noted, “Supporting him very much, absolutely by his side, is Queen Camilla, who is going to all the engagements that they would have gone to together on her own… She is holding the Royal Family up and being strong.”

The D-Day Controversy

On June 6, 2024, during the D-Day 80th anniversary commemorations in France, Camilla appeared alongside King Charles. However, their appearance was overshadowed by controversy. While laying wreaths at the British Normandy Memorial, French First Lady Brigitte Macron reached for Camilla’s hand in a show of solidarity. Camilla, following strict protocol, kept her arms at her side and did not take Macron’s hand.

The gesture drew criticism from some commentators. Emma Woolf said on GB News, “I like Camilla, but I thought this was unworthy of her… Brigitte Macron is not a ‘commoner’; she is the wife of the French President. I thought it was really unnecessary.”

Many online users agreed, suggesting that Camilla had missed an opportunity to demonstrate warmth and modernize the monarchy’s image.

An Emotional Moment

A day earlier, during the D-Day commemoration in Portsmouth on June 5, navy veteran Eric Bateman delivered a moving address. As he spoke with pride about the legacy of the veterans, Camilla was visibly emotional and in tears, showing her human side to the public.

Despite past controversy, Queen Camilla has increasingly been recognized for her steadfastness and dedication to supporting both the king and the monarchy during one of its most challenging modern chapters. Her actions—though occasionally criticized—have revealed a woman focused on duty, resilience, and dignity under immense pressure.
