Princess Anne gets put on UK coin for first time ever and everyone’s saying the same thing

For the first time in British history, Princess Anne is being recognised with a commemorative UK coin – a tribute many royal fans say is long overdue.

The Royal Mint announced the release of the coin on Friday, 18 July, just weeks ahead of the Princess Royal’s 75th birthday on 15 August. The design, which features a profile of Princess Anne wearing the elegant Aquamarine Pineflower Tiara by Cartier, has been personally approved by the royal herself.

The coin is inscribed with the words: “The Princess Royal – Celebrating 75 Years – Duty and Devotion,” and includes her official coat of arms. It will be available in various editions, starting at £17.50 for the uncirculated version, and can be purchased through The Royal Mint’s website.

A tribute to lifelong duty

Speaking on the occasion, Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coins at The Royal Mint, said: “For the first time in British numismatic history, we are honoured to celebrate The Princess Royal on an official UK coin. Her Royal Highness’s unwavering commitment to public service, charitable work, and support of His Majesty’s Armed Forces over seven and a half decades makes her truly deserving of this tribute.”

The design was created by Thomas T. Docherty, a coin artist at the Mint, who said he aimed to reflect Princess Anne’s enduring dedication and strength of character. “It has been an honour to create this commemorative coin,” Docherty said. “As a Scot, I admire her dedication to Scottish organisations and communities, and I hope this coin serves as a fitting tribute.”

Public reaction: “It’s about time!”

Since the unveiling, fans have taken to social media to applaud the recognition. Many expressed surprise that this is Anne’s first time being honoured on a UK coin, despite her long-standing service to the monarchy and numerous charitable causes.

“It’s about time this lady was recognised for all she has done and still doing for the future of the monarchy,” one Facebook user wrote. Another added: “She’s the backbone of that family.” The sentiment has been echoed widely, with many praising Anne’s no-nonsense approach to royal duties and tireless work ethic.

Known for her low-profile yet impactful role within the Royal Family, Princess Anne has become one of the monarchy’s most respected figures. From her Olympic career to her support of over 300 charities, her legacy spans far beyond the spotlight.

As the Princess Royal turns 75 this year, the coin is more than a birthday tribute — it’s a long-overdue acknowledgment of a royal life defined by discipline, resilience, and duty.
