Pregnant With Triplets, I Was Left Homeless By My Husband Before Sunset… By Midnight, A Billionaire Had Changed My Fate—And When My Ex Arrived With Lawyers To Claim My Babies, One Forgotten Promise Turned His Perfect Plan Upside Down

Part 2 of 3

“You know people there?”

“My foundation helped build the maternal care wing.”

Another wave of pain moved through her body.

Silas leaned closer, his voice steady.

“Look at me, Paige. Breathe slowly. You do not have to solve your entire life tonight. You only need to reach the hospital safely.”

Paige froze.

“How do you know my name?”

For the first time since he had stepped onto the bus, Silas appeared uncertain.

He looked toward the rain-covered window.

“That is something I should have explained years ago.”

Three Heartbeats in a Quiet Room

The medical team was waiting when the SUV arrived.

Paige was taken through a private entrance and moved into an examination room. Monitors were placed across her stomach while a nurse checked her blood pressure and asked questions about the evening.

Within minutes, three rapid heartbeats filled the room.

Paige covered her mouth as tears slipped down her cheeks.

The doctor watched the screens carefully.

“All three babies are responding well. You are experiencing early contractions, but we have options. Our priority is keeping you calm and giving them more time.”

Paige closed her eyes.

For several hours, she had felt as though everything was falling away from her.

But those three sounds remained steady.

Then the door opened.

Derek entered without permission.

Two attorneys stood behind him, holding folders and speaking quietly to a hospital administrator.

Derek’s gaze moved from Paige to Silas.

“Mr. Mercer,” he said. “I did not realize you had become involved in my marriage.”

Silas stepped between Derek and the bed.

“Your marriage ended when you left a pregnant woman with no transportation, little money, and less than a day to find a home.”

Derek’s expression hardened.

“You have heard only her version.”

Paige pushed herself slightly higher against the pillows.

“My version includes signed documents, four hundred dollars, a bus ride, and your message threatening to decide what happens to my children.”

Derek looked at her stomach.

“I did not know there were three.”

Silence settled over the room.

Paige felt something inside her become very still.

“So one child was easy to abandon,” she said, “but three children suddenly became valuable?”

“That is not what I meant.”

“Then explain what you meant.”

Derek opened his mouth, but no answer came.

One of his attorneys stepped forward.

“Mrs. Ashford, our intention is to establish a temporary plan that protects everyone involved.”

Paige shook her head.

“I am not signing anything else.”

Derek moved closer.

“You are exhausted and emotional. Let the professionals handle this.”

For years, Paige had accepted that tone. It was the voice he used when he wanted her to question her own judgment.

This time, she looked directly at him.

“No.”

The word was quiet, but it changed the entire room.

Silas turned toward her.

“Do you want him to remain here?”

“No.”

The doctor immediately addressed the administrator.

“My patient has asked for privacy. Everyone without a medical role must leave.”

Derek stared at Paige.

“You will regret allowing strangers to influence you.”

She placed both hands over her stomach.

“The greatest mistake I made was allowing you to convince me that I had no voice.”

Security escorted Derek and his attorneys out.

When the door closed, Paige began to tremble.

Silas stayed several feet away, giving her space.

“You did well,” he said.

Paige looked at him through her tears.

“Now tell me how you knew my name.”

The Promise My Mother Left Behind

Silas reached into the inner pocket of his coat and removed an old photograph.

He handed it to Paige.

The picture had been taken in a hospital room nearly twenty years earlier. A teenage girl rested against several pillows. Beside her stood a younger Silas and a nurse wearing blue scrubs.

Paige recognized the nurse immediately.

Her mother, Elaine Norwood.

Elaine had passed away when Paige was sixteen. She had been kind, practical, and deeply private. She rarely spoke about her work, and she never discussed the powerful people she had met.

Paige touched the edge of the photograph.

“Why were you with my mother?”

Silas sat in the chair near the window.

“My younger sister, Laurel, developed a serious condition during a winter storm. The hospital lost part of its power, several employees could not reach the building, and my family was trapped on the other side of the city.”

He looked down at the photograph.

“Your mother stayed with Laurel through the entire night. She kept her calm, found the right specialist, and refused to leave until my sister was stable.”

Paige’s throat tightened.

“She never mentioned this.”

“She refused publicity and would not accept money. I asked how I could repay her.”

Silas looked directly at Paige.

“She told me that if her daughter ever appeared to be alone, I should not look away.”

Paige pressed the photograph against her chest.

For years, she had believed her mother had left only memories, recipes, and a few pieces of jewelry.

Now she understood that Elaine had also left a promise in the hands of a man powerful enough to keep it.

“Were you watching me?” Paige asked.

“From a distance,” Silas admitted. “I knew about your marriage, but I believed interfering without your permission would be wrong. Tonight, I saw you on that bus and realized waiting had become another form of looking away.”

Paige studied him carefully.

“You should have told me sooner.”

“You are right.”

It was the first time in years that a powerful man had admitted fault without making excuses.

A Lawyer Who Worked for Me

The next morning, an attorney named Camille Dorsey arrived at the hospital.

She wore a navy suit, carried a leather briefcase, and spoke with the calm precision of someone who had spent years protecting people from complicated families.

She sat beside Paige’s bed.

“Silas asked me to meet you, but I will represent you only if you choose me. My responsibility would be to you, not to him.”

That distinction mattered to Paige.

“What is Derek trying to do?”

Camille opened her tablet.

“He is building an argument that you lack financial stability and that your current living arrangement is uncertain. He may also claim that Mr. Mercer is influencing your decisions.”

Paige let out a tired breath.

“He removed my access to our money, forced me out of our home, and now intends to use my lack of money against me.”

“That appears to be his strategy,” Camille said. “However, he cannot simply take control of your children because he has more resources.”

The words reached Paige like sunlight through a closed curtain.

Camille continued.

“We will document the timing of the separation, the small transfer, the immediate removal of account access, his message, and his arrival here with attorneys. We will also request full financial disclosure.”

Paige nodded.

“I want you to represent me.”

Camille gave one firm nod.

“Then from this moment forward, he speaks through me.”

Later that afternoon, a nurse brought in the ultrasound machine.
