Obama releases rare statement after Trump claimed former president was ‘guilty’ of ‘treason’

Former President Barack Obama has issued a rare public response to Donald Trump, who recently accused him of committing treason.

While the 79-year-old former president has long used inflammatory language against political opponents and former leaders, Obama—now 63—has mostly stayed silent, brushing off the many attacks made over the years.

However, this time, after Trump accused him of trying to sabotage the 2016 election—when Trump defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton—the 44th president decided to push back.

Trump Claims Obama Tried to Rig the 2016 Election

Speaking from the Oval Office on July 22, Trump made the explosive accusation. “It’s there, he’s guilty. This was treason,” he said, referring to Obama. “They tried to steal the election, they tried to obfuscate the election. They did things that nobody’s ever imagined, even in other countries.”

Trump is alleging that Obama manipulated intelligence reports to make it seem like Russia interfered in the 2016 election, casting doubt on the legitimacy of Trump’s win.

The Obama administration had stated that Russia attempted to interfere in that election but maintained that the effort was ultimately unsuccessful in changing the outcome.

No Evidence Backing Trump’s Claim

Despite the bold accusations, Trump offered no proof to support them. His comments followed closely on the heels of a statement by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who just four days earlier had accused Obama of leading a “treasonous conspiracy” while investigating alleged Russian interference in 2016.

Russia has consistently denied any involvement in tampering with the election.

Gabbard has since threatened to refer senior Obama-era officials to the Justice Department for prosecution related to the matter.

Obama’s Office Calls Out ‘Bizarre’ Accusations

Obama’s spokesperson, Patrick Rodenbush, has now spoken out in response to Trump’s remarks. “Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response,” Rodenbush said. “But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one.”

He added, “These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.”

Rodenbush pointed to the 2020 bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report, which confirmed that Russia had indeed worked to help Trump win the 2016 election. The report detailed how Russian interference was carried out in part through Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and the WikiLeaks platform.

“Nothing in the document issued last week (by Gabbard) undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes,” Rodenbush emphasized.

MAGA Movement Splinters Over Epstein Files

These heated accusations come at a time when Trump’s base is already showing signs of internal division. The Trump administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation has sparked backlash, even among MAGA supporters.

Earlier this month, US Attorney General Pam Bondi declared that no further Epstein-related documents would be released and stated that there was no “client list”—a statement that contradicted her earlier remarks.

The announcement stirred concern and criticism within the MAGA community. A recent ‘Student Action Summit’ hosted by conservative youth group Turning Point USA featured the Epstein files as a major point of debate, revealing growing tensions within the movement.
