Part 2 of 3

“Answer it.”

He shook his head.

“Brooke, this isn’t helping.”

“Put it on speaker.”

Roland gave his son a long look.

Evan finally answered.

Dana’s voice came through the room.

“Evan, I just left my appointment. I’m eight weeks along. I’m not doing this alone again.”

Again.

That single word changed everything.

I looked at Evan.

Roland did too.

Evan ended the call.

“What did she mean by ‘again’?” I asked.

He rubbed both hands over his face.

Finally, he admitted there had been an earlier pregnancy the previous year that had not continued.

My chest tightened.

That was the same year Evan had sat beside me during every difficult fertility appointment and told me there was no one in the world he trusted more than me.

I stood.

“You need to leave.”

Evan stepped toward me.

“Brooke, you’ve barely slept. You just had surgery. Maybe we should talk after you’ve had time to recover.”

Roland immediately moved between us.

“Her recovery does not make the facts less real.”

Evan stopped.

Then headlights swept across the windows.

A car had pulled into our driveway.

The Child at the Door

When I opened the door, a woman around thirty stood on the porch.

Dana.

Beside her was a little boy of about six.

He had dark brown hair and unusually pale gray eyes.

Before anyone could speak, the child looked past me and spotted Evan.

His entire face brightened.

“Evan!”

He ran inside.

Evan looked as if someone had pulled the floor away from beneath him.

Dana followed slowly.

“His name is Mason,” she said. “And there are things Evan hasn’t told either of us.”

Roland stared at the boy.

Then he looked at Dana.

“How old is he?”

“Six.”

Evan immediately said, “Dad, it’s complicated.”

Roland’s expression hardened.

“That phrase has done enough work tonight.”

Dana reached into her handbag and removed several documents.

One contained information about Mason’s parentage.

Another involved the Mercer family trust.

But the strangest document carried a name I recognized immediately.

Halstead Financial Review.

My late mother’s accounting firm.

My Mother’s Name Changed Everything

My mother, Elaine Halstead, had been a forensic accountant.

She passed away twelve years earlier, long before I married Evan.

Yet her signature appeared at the bottom of one of the documents Dana had brought.

Roland stared at it.

“Your mother reviewed records connected to my father’s company.”

I felt suddenly cold.

Dana explained that her own father, Preston Pike, had worked with several businesses connected to Mercer Freight Holdings years earlier.

According to the papers, my mother had discovered irregular transactions involving companies Preston controlled.

There was also an amendment supposedly allowing certain trust assets to be redirected depending on the birth and legal status of future children.

Something about it felt wrong.

Roland agreed.

By morning, we were sitting in the home office of retired probate judge Franklin Mercer, Roland’s uncle and one of the few people who still had access to the original trust records.

Franklin examined the paperwork carefully.

Then he opened a secured digital archive.

“Elaine’s signature is genuine,” he finally said.

My heart sank.

But he continued.

“The document attached to that signature is not.”

Someone had taken pages my mother had signed during an ordinary corporate restructuring and later attached altered provisions to them.

The original trust contained nothing resembling the clause in Dana’s papers.

Instead, it contained something far more important.

Any trustee or manager who knowingly attempted to redirect protected assets through false documentation would immediately lose management authority.

The Truth My Mother Left Behind

There was another surprise.

My mother had discovered suspicious transfers connected to Preston Pike more than a decade earlier.

Before her passing, she had stored certified copies of her audit findings in a secure records vault.

The instructions were unusually specific.

The envelope was to be opened if anyone ever presented an altered version of the Mercer trust containing her signature.

Inside that envelope was a handwritten letter addressed to me.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

My sweet Brooke, if these papers ever reach you, remember that money can reveal the weakest parts of people, but truth gives ordinary people the strength to stand when everything around them is falling apart.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

For twelve years, I had believed my mother’s work belonged to a part of her life I would never fully understand.

Now it was protecting me.

The financial investigation that followed uncovered years of questionable transactions involving Preston and several companies he controlled.

Evan had become involved later.

He hadn’t created the scheme, but he had willingly moved money he had no right to move.
