My Son Moved Me Into a Nursing Home Without Warning, Changed His Number, and Quietly Tried to Sell My $900,000 House. He Thought He Was Taking the Most Valuable Thing I Had—He Had No Idea It Was the Least Valuable Thing My Late Husband Left Me. Then I Opened an Envelope My Son Had Packed Into My Suitcase. Three Days Later, a Black Rolls-Royce Pulled Up Outside… and the Man Who Walked Into the Lobby Took One Look at Me and Said, “Evelyn? I’ve Been Looking for You.”

Part 2 of 3

On the front he wrote:

EVELYN — KEEP THIS WITH YOU.

I opened it once.

Inside were letters, account information, and the name of a man I had not seen in more than thirty years.

August Reed.

Franklin had once been his closest friend.

Long before our modest life in Asheville, Franklin and August had started a regional transportation company together.

Franklin sold most of his interest when Corbin was young because he wanted a quieter life.

August stayed.

The company grew.

Then it grew again.

By the time I was sixty, Reed Continental Transportation had operations across the country.

Franklin rarely talked about it.

When I once asked whether he regretted leaving, he laughed.

“I got you, our son, and enough money to sleep at night. What exactly am I supposed to regret?”

What Corbin never knew was that Franklin had retained a small private stake.

Not enough to make us famous.

More than enough to change everything.

The original documents proving that ownership were not inside our house.

Franklin had placed them with a private trust company in Charlotte.

The envelope in my suitcase contained the contact information.

Corbin had packed it himself without knowing what it was.

The Third Morning

On my third morning at Willow Creek, Denise came into the dining room looking unusually excited.

“Evelyn, someone is asking for you.”

I assumed it was Corbin.

For one foolish second, relief rushed through me.

Then I entered the lobby.

A tall man in a dark suit stood beside the front doors.

He appeared to be in his late fifties, with closely trimmed gray hair.

Outside, parked under the covered entrance, was a black Rolls-Royce.

Several residents had already gathered near the windows.

The stranger looked at me.

His face changed instantly.

“Mrs. Fairchild?”

I stopped.

“Yes?”

He smiled.

“I knew it was you.”

I had never seen him before.

He stepped forward and extended his hand.

“My name is Lucas Vane. I recently became Mr. Reed’s personal driver.”

My heart skipped.

“August Reed?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

He reached into his jacket and removed a folded piece of paper.

“Mr. Reed has been trying to locate you for two days.”

Apparently, the trust company had contacted August after I called them the previous afternoon.

I had expected an attorney.

I had not expected a Rolls-Royce.

“Why would August send you personally?”

Lucas hesitated.

Then he smiled.

“Because the moment he heard where you were staying, he said waiting until tomorrow was unacceptable.”

The Man I Hadn’t Seen in Thirty Years

August Reed arrived less than an hour later.

He was eighty-one now.

His hair was white, his shoulders slightly stooped, but his voice had not changed.

The moment he walked through the lobby, he opened his arms.

“Evie Fairchild, what on earth are you doing here?”

I laughed and cried at the same time.

“Apparently becoming inconvenient.”

His smile disappeared.

We sat in a private room with Denise nearby.

I told him what Corbin had done.

August listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he stared at the floor for several seconds.

“Franklin would be furious.”

“Franklin isn’t here.”

August looked directly at me.

“No, but everything he built for you still is.”

Then he told me something Franklin had never fully explained.

The shares Franklin retained decades earlier had been restructured repeatedly as Reed Continental expanded.

Through mergers, reinvestment, and private holdings, their current value was far beyond anything I had imagined.

My personal trust contained approximately $3.6 million in liquid assets.

My retained business interest was worth considerably more.

The little house Corbin wanted was perhaps the least important asset I owned.

I stared at August.

“Why didn’t Franklin tell me?”

August smiled sadly.

“He tried. You told him financial paperwork made you sleepy.”

I covered my face.

That sounded exactly like me.

What Corbin Had Done While I Was Gone

The next surprise was less amusing.

My attorney, Paige Hollister, discovered that Corbin had already contacted a realtor about my house.
