Happy Soul Moral Stories

My Six-Year-Old Pulled Me Aside at My Baby Shower and Pointed at a Blonde Woman Standing Beside Our Pool: “Mommy, That’s the Lady Who Sleeps in Your Bed When You’re at the Hospital”—I Was Seven Months Pregnant and Ready to Confront Her in Front of Fifty Guests, Until the Sunlight Hit the Sapphire Necklace Around Her Neck and I Recognized Exactly Where It Had Come From

Part 2 of 3

Julian sat beside her.

“Genevieve works twelve-hour shifts. Nights sometimes. Weekends.”

“She’s a doctor.”

“Exactly.”

He sounded almost amused.

“If custody gets difficult, I document who’s actually available every day.”

Victoria tilted her head.

“You’d use her job against her?”

“I’d use the schedule.”

Then she glanced toward the mirror.

“And the baby?”

Julian was quiet for a moment.

“One problem at a time.”

I closed my laptop.

My hand had been resting over my stomach without me noticing.

The baby moved beneath my palm.

I opened the computer again and downloaded everything.

One copy went into cloud storage.

Another went to a separate account Julian didn’t know existed.

Then I called one person.

My Attorney Watched the Video Twice

Eleanor Thorne had handled an estate issue for my family several years earlier.

She agreed to see me that afternoon.

I placed my laptop on her conference table.

She watched Victoria put on my necklace.

She watched Julian discuss the investments.

Then she replayed the section about Leo.

When the video ended, Eleanor removed her glasses.

“Have you confronted him?”

“No.”

“Don’t.”

She pointed at the paused image of Julian.

“The affair is one issue. This conversation about moving marital assets is another.”

“Can he take my family’s trust?”

“Not the way it’s structured.”

I exhaled.

“But we need to find out exactly what he has moved from the accounts he can access.”

I nodded.

Then I asked the question I’d been avoiding.

“What about my children?”

Eleanor leaned forward.

“Working long hospital shifts does not automatically make you an unfit or uninvolved parent. Don’t let him scare you with that.”

She slid a legal pad toward herself.

“Keep Leo’s routine normal. Don’t question him repeatedly. Don’t tell Julian what you have.”

“So I go home?”

“You go home.”

“And pretend?”

“For now, you verify.”

Over the next week, Eleanor helped me review the financial records I was legally entitled to see.

Julian had been careful.

Several joint investments had been shifted gradually.

Not enough at once to make me notice.

Enough to show a pattern.

Then Julian came home one evening carrying a folder from an event planner.

“I have a surprise.”

I was cutting strawberries for Leo.

“What kind?”

“Another party.”

I stared at him.

“Julian, we just had a baby shower.”

He laughed.

“This one’s smaller. Poolside celebration. Family, some people from work. A few board members.”

He kissed my cheek.

“One last celebration before we’re a family of four.”

I set the knife down.

“When?”

“Two weeks.”

Later that night, after Julian fell asleep, I emailed Eleanor.

I told her about the party.

Then I opened the saved video again.

On my screen, Victoria was standing in my bedroom wearing my sapphire.

For days, Julian had assumed the balance of power hadn’t changed.

He was wrong.

This time, I wasn’t going to cancel his party.

I was going to help him make sure everyone important showed up.

The Poolside Celebration Julian Thought Would Prove Everything Was Perfect

For the next two weeks, I helped my husband plan a party celebrating the family he was quietly preparing to dismantle.

Julian never suspected a thing.

He approved the catering menu at breakfast. He asked whether the flowers should be white or pale pink. He showed me the guest list and pointed out the board members he especially wanted to impress.

“Martin Cole confirmed,” he said one evening. “That’s important.”

Martin was one of the senior executives at Julian’s company.

I kept folding Leo’s laundry.

“Good.”

“Victoria’s coming too. She helped coordinate some of the work people.”

I looked up.

“Victoria Hayes?”

There was the smallest pause.

“Yeah. You met her at the shower.”

“I remember.”

He went back to his phone.

I didn’t ask whether she planned to wear my jewelry again.

Eleanor and I had spent those two weeks documenting the financial activity Julian had discussed on camera. The family trust was protected, but several joint investments had been redirected in ways Eleanor wanted preserved before Julian knew I was looking.

The recordings were backed up.

The financial records were secured.

My divorce papers were prepared.

And Julian was personally assembling a guest list containing almost everyone whose opinion mattered to him.

I didn’t have to invite a single person.

Victoria Came Back Wearing the Sapphire

Saturday afternoon, our backyard looked almost exactly as it had during my baby shower.

White umbrellas surrounded the pool. Caterers carried trays between tables. A large outdoor screen stood near the covered patio, supposedly for family photographs and a short slideshow Julian had arranged.

Leo wore a light blue shirt and spent most of the afternoon near my sister.

I wore a loose white maternity dress.

Julian stood beside me greeting guests as though we were posing for a holiday card.

“You okay?” he asked.

“Just tired.”

His hand moved across my back.

“Sit whenever you need to.”

Then I saw Victoria.

Emerald green dress.

Blonde hair pinned loosely behind her shoulders.

And the sapphire.

Again.

She had worn my anniversary necklace into my house twice.

Victoria approached us holding champagne.

“Genevieve, you look beautiful.”

“Thank you.”

Her fingers briefly touched the stone at her throat.

I looked directly at it.

“So do you.”

She glanced away first.

A little after four, Julian gathered everyone near the pool.

There were perhaps forty people facing the screen—our relatives, neighbors, several people from his office, two board members and Martin Cole.

Julian handed me a glass of sparkling water.

“Apparently there’s a surprise slideshow.”

“Apparently.”

He laughed.

Leo came over and pressed himself against my side.

The screen lit up.

First came ordinary photographs.

Our wedding.

Leo as a baby.

Julian holding my hand at an ultrasound appointment.

People smiled.

Then the screen went black.

Julian looked toward the technician.

“Is that it?”

The next image appeared.

Our bedroom.

Victoria stopped moving.

Onscreen, she walked toward my dresser wearing my white robe.

Someone behind me whispered:

“What is this?”

Victoria’s recorded voice came through the speakers.

“I still can’t believe she hasn’t noticed.”

Then Julian:

“Genevieve barely wears it.”

Nobody beside the pool moved.

The recording continued.

“How much longer are we supposed to keep pretending?”

I felt Julian turn toward me.

I didn’t look at him.

Onscreen, he explained that he wanted to wait until after the baby arrived.
