“Why did you empty her closet?”

“Because I need space. I was going to put her things in boxes.”

Then she said the sentence that changed the way I saw her forever.

“Natalie, your mother is getting older. Nobody knows how long she’ll really want to keep living here alone anyway.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

My mother had been in the hospital for only a few days, and Colleen was already rearranging her life.

I reached for my phone.

“I have something you should see.”

The Two-Minute Phone Call

I opened the video Aunt Marjorie had sent me twenty minutes earlier.

There she was, smiling into the camera.

Behind her was Colleen’s living room.

“Natalie! We made it!”

Colleen froze.

Marjorie turned the camera toward her adult son, Travis, who was carrying several large bags into the house.

“Travis is staying too. Thank Colleen for letting us use the place!”

Colleen grabbed my arm.

“What is this?”

I gently pulled away.

The video continued.

Marjorie cheerfully explained that they might stay for several days, possibly longer.

Colleen’s face lost all color.

“They’re in my house?”

I nodded.

“It was empty.”

“But that’s my home!”

I waited.

She stared at me.

Then I said quietly, “Exactly.”

For the first time, she had nothing to say.

Suddenly, An Empty House Mattered

Colleen immediately called Brent.

“Your wife put Marjorie in my house!”

Even from several feet away, I could hear Brent’s confused voice.

Colleen continued complaining until I finally spoke.

“Tell him why I did it.”

She ignored me.

Then her phone rang again.

It was Marjorie.

Colleen answered.

“What?”

Marjorie’s cheerful voice filled the room.

“Where do you keep the clean sheets? Travis is going to use your room.”

Colleen nearly jumped.

“Nobody is sleeping in my room!”

“Why not? You aren’t here.”

I had to turn away to hide my smile.

Colleen looked at me.

I raised an eyebrow.

“Interesting argument, isn’t it?”

She knew exactly what I meant.

Within minutes, she was throwing her belongings back into her suitcases.

But before she left, I stopped her.

“You need to put my mother’s things back.”

She stared at me.

“I don’t have time.”

“Then make time.”

“And who exactly is going to make me?”

I picked up my phone.

“My mother. I’m video calling her soon. Would you like me to show her what you did to her bedroom?”

Colleen’s expression changed immediately.

Ten minutes later, she was rehanging every dress she had removed.

What Hurt More Than the Intrusion

After Colleen left, I stayed behind to restore the apartment.

That was when the humor disappeared.

One of the blouses on the bed had been a gift from my father before he passed away.

A handmade throw that had belonged to my grandmother was crumpled near a suitcase.

To Colleen, they were objects taking up space.

To my mother, they were pieces of her life.

Then I found something beneath one of Colleen’s bags.

A complete set of new toiletries.

Shampoo. Toothpaste. Skin cream. Soap. A robe.

She hadn’t planned to stay for one night.

She had expected to settle in.

And Brent knew.

That was the part that hurt most.

I had told my husband no.

He had taken a key that didn’t belong to him and given it to his mother anyway.

This wasn’t confusion.

It was a choice.

Before leaving, I called a locksmith.

“I need the lock changed tomorrow morning.”

My Mother Learned the Truth

I brought Mom the novel and folder she had asked for.

She studied my face.

“What happened?”

I tried to avoid the subject, but mothers have a way of knowing.

So I told her.

When I explained that Colleen had entered her bedroom and removed her clothes, Mom became quiet.

But when I told her Brent had supplied the key, her expression changed.

“Brent gave it to her?”
