Fortunately, he was alert and behaving normally.

While we waited, Dad made several calls.

Then he sat beside me.

“Mallory, there’s something else.”

I already knew I wasn’t going to like it.

Dad explained that Travis’s construction investment company had been struggling for months.

Not struggling in the way Travis had described to me.

Collapsing.

He had borrowed money from several people and hidden the debts.

There were overdue business loans, private obligations, and accounts I had never known existed.

My hands started shaking.

“How much?”

Dad hesitated.

“Enough that he couldn’t realistically fix it with his current income.”

Then came the detail that changed everything.

A substantial insurance policy had recently been created involving Beckett.

I stared at Dad.

“No.”

He didn’t respond.

“No, Dad. Travis loves him.”

Dad’s expression softened.

“Then we’ll find an innocent explanation.”

But I could hear what he wasn’t saying.

There might not be one.

My Mother-in-Law Knew More Than She Admitted

Investigators began looking more closely at Travis’s finances.

The more they uncovered, the worse it became.

Corinne had transferred money to Travis several times.

Dale, my father-in-law, appeared to know very little about the situation.

Then investigators found messages between Travis and Corinne discussing debts, insurance paperwork, and what they repeatedly called “the solution.”

Nothing in the early messages directly explained what that phrase meant.

But one message from Corinne made my stomach turn.

“Once this is handled, everyone can start over.”

Another from Travis read:

“Mallory can never know why the policy was increased.”

I read those words again and again.

This was the man who kissed me every morning.

The man who rocked Beckett to sleep.

The man who had stood beside me during the hardest year of my life.

I wanted desperately to believe there was another explanation.

I Agreed to Meet Travis

Two days later, Travis finally reached me through a mutual friend.

He said he was confused.

He said my father was poisoning me against him.

He said there had been a terrible misunderstanding.

Most of all, he wanted to meet.

Dad didn’t like the idea.

The investigators, however, believed Travis might reveal information if he thought I still trusted him.

So I agreed.

We met at a quiet coffee shop with people nearby.

Travis looked exhausted.

“Mallory, please. Come home.”

I stared at him.

“Tell me about the insurance policy.”

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“It’s financial planning. Parents do that.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you’ve been stressed.”

“And the debt?”

He looked down.

“Business went bad.”

“How bad?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I can fix it.”

“How?”

Silence.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

“What did your mother mean by ‘the solution’?”

Travis went pale.

One Sentence Changed Everything

For several seconds, Travis said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Mom was desperate.”

My heart pounded.

“Desperate for what?”

“To keep everything from falling apart.”

“What does Beckett have to do with your financial problems?”

Travis looked toward the window.

“Nothing was supposed to happen the way you’re imagining.”

That sentence terrified me more than a denial would have.

I leaned forward.

“Then tell me what was supposed to happen.”

He lowered his voice.

“Mom said there were ways to make something look accidental. I told her it was crazy.”

I could barely breathe.

“But you kept the insurance policy.”

He didn’t answer.

“You kept taking her money.”

Still nothing.

“And you let her come near our son.”

Travis finally looked at me.
