Happy Soul Moral Stories

“My Husband Walked Into Our Family Dinner Holding Another Woman’s Hand and Calmly Announced She’d Be Moving Into Our Guest Room—At Eight Months Pregnant, I Didn’t Scream or Ask a Single Question. I Took Our Two Children Upstairs, Came Back Down With Three Suitcases I’d Secretly Packed Weeks Ago, and Before I Walked Out, I Told Him Five Words That Made Him Stop Smiling”

Part 2 of 3

The court also issued temporary restrictions preventing either of us from moving or disposing of certain marital assets while the case was pending.

Brandon didn’t know yet.

But he was about to.

I zipped Amelia’s coat.

Then I rolled the first suitcase into the hallway.

Brandon was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

He looked at the luggage.

For the first time that evening, his expression changed.

“What is that?”

“Our things.”

“What do you mean, your things?”

I brought down the second suitcase.

Cynthia was standing near the kitchen.

Her overnight bag was still by the front door.

Mine was now beside it.

For almost a year, I had imagined what leaving would feel like.

It turned out mostly to involve wheels bumping down stairs.

He Thought I Had Nowhere to Go

Brandon followed me into the foyer.

“Charlotte, stop.”

I put Amelia’s backpack over my shoulder.

“Kids, coats.”

Diane stood up.

“Charlotte, maybe everybody should calm down.”

I looked at her.

“I am calm.”

That seemed to bother Brandon more than if I had yelled.

He stepped between me and the door.

“Where exactly are you planning to go?”

“Somewhere else.”

He laughed once.

“With what money?”

I said nothing.

“Seriously. Think about what you’re doing.”

I reached into my purse and touched my phone.

The recording was already running.

Victoria had told me to document conversations when lawful and appropriate, particularly if Brandon made threats involving money or the children.

I wasn’t trying to trap him.

I didn’t have to.

He kept talking.

“You don’t have a job.”

Ryan shifted in his chair.

“Brandon, maybe—”

“Stay out of it.”

Then Brandon looked at me again.

“That car is through my company. Your phone is through my company. Your insurance is through my company. The cards are mine.”

I picked up the handle of the largest suitcase.

“Okay.”

His face tightened.

“Okay?”

“I heard you.”

“If you walk out that door, don’t expect me to keep paying for everything while you play single mom.”

Diane finally stood.

“Brandon, enough.”

He pointed toward the driveway.

“She thinks she can just leave. Fine. I’ll shut off the cards tonight. The phone too. She can figure out how independent she really is.”

Lucas was watching him.

That was the only moment I nearly lost my composure.

Not because Brandon was threatening me.

Because my son was listening.

I opened the door.

A dark gray SUV was waiting at the curb.

The driver got out and opened the rear hatch.

Brandon stared.

“Whose car is that?”

“A ride.”

“Where are you going?”

I helped Amelia into the back seat.

Then Lucas.

Brandon followed me onto the porch.

“Charlotte, answer me.”

I turned around.

“Call your lawyer.”

“For what?”

I closed Amelia’s door.

“You’ll know soon.”

I didn’t say anything else.

As we pulled away, I looked back once.

Cynthia’s cream overnight bag was still sitting inside our front doorway.

Three weeks earlier, mine had been hidden in a closet.

Now hers was the one that looked out of place.

Brandon Told the Court I Was Unstable

The papers reached Brandon the next morning.

By noon, I had seventeen missed calls.

I answered none of them.

Then the messages started.

You planned this?

You took my children without even discussing it?

You need to bring them home immediately.

Then:

This is exactly the kind of irrational behavior I’ve been warning everyone about.

I forwarded that one to Victoria.

She called five minutes later.

“Keep everything.”

“I am.”

“And don’t argue with him by text.”

Brandon moved quickly.

His attorney requested an emergency hearing and argued that I had abruptly removed two young children from their home while eight months pregnant because I discovered my husband was involved with another woman.

That description wasn’t completely false.

It was simply missing eleven months.

Brandon said I had become increasingly suspicious and emotionally volatile.

He mentioned pregnancy hormones.

Stress.

Jealousy.

He even included statements from relatives saying he had expressed concern about me for months.

When Victoria showed me the filing, I recognized the phrases immediately.

“Overly sensitive.”

“Erratic.”

“Not acting like herself.”

Brandon hadn’t invented his story the night Cynthia came to dinner.

He had been preparing it.

At the temporary hearing, he sat across the room from me in a navy suit.

He didn’t look angry.

He looked concerned.

That was worse.

His attorney said, “Mr. Palmer’s primary concern is stability for the children.”

Victoria slid a transcript across the table.

“Then we should probably discuss what Mr. Palmer said about their stability approximately twenty minutes before Mrs. Palmer left the home.”

The recording played.

Brandon’s voice filled the small courtroom.

“I’ll shut off the cards tonight. The phone too.”

Then:

“She can figure out how independent she really is.”

Nobody spoke for a few seconds.

The judge looked toward Brandon.

The recording continued.

“Your insurance is through my company.”

Brandon leaned toward his attorney.

His attorney stopped him with one hand.

Victoria didn’t make a speech.

She didn’t need to.
