Part 2 of 3

Blake did not correct him.

Instead, he moved closer to her and smiled for the camera.

Corinne broadcast the entire entrance to her followers.

“My brother is about to enter the biggest chapter of his career,” she said into her phone. “Some people are born to lead.”

An event coordinator guided the family toward the central table directly below the stage.

Blake immediately understood the significance of the placement.

That table was reserved for Fairchild Capital’s senior executives, the largest donors, and the company’s mysterious founder.

He sat down with renewed confidence.

“They are going to expand our partnership,” he whispered to Sloane.

“How large?”

“Possibly two hundred million dollars. Maybe more.”

Sloane’s eyes brightened.

“Then tomorrow we stop pretending.”

Blake smiled.

“The separation documents are already being prepared.”

Lenette lifted her glass.

“Arden will agree to whatever you offer. Give her a small apartment and enough money to begin again. She should be grateful.”

Warren Winslow sat quietly beside his wife.

Unlike the others, he looked uneasy.

“You are all speaking as though Arden has no feelings,” he said.

Lenette turned toward him.

“Do not become sentimental now. That woman has enjoyed this family’s generosity for years.”

None of them noticed the microphones built into the table decorations.

The ballroom’s broadcast system recorded every word.

Inside the production room, Graham Voss listened in silence.

The Woman at the Top of the Staircase

At nine forty-two, the ballroom lights dimmed.

A large screen behind the stage displayed the Fairchild Capital emblem.

The evening’s host announced a new national initiative that would provide funding for community medical clinics, affordable family housing, clean-energy programs, and scholarships for students from rural towns.

Blake straightened his jacket.

He expected to hear his company’s name.

Instead, the host smiled toward the upper balcony.

“For many years, the founder of Fairchild Capital has chosen privacy over public attention. Tonight, she has decided to step forward.”

The doors at the top of the staircase opened.

Arden appeared beneath the warm white lights.

Her sapphire gown moved softly as she descended. Her dark hair fell in polished waves over one shoulder, and her grandmother’s necklace reflected the light with every step.

Two members of her executive security team followed several feet behind her.

The ballroom became silent.

Blake stood so quickly that his chair struck the table.

Sloane’s hand slipped from his arm.

Lenette stared at Arden as if she were looking at a stranger.

Corinne lowered her phone, but her livestream continued.

“That cannot be her,” Blake whispered.

Arden reached the bottom of the staircase and walked toward the stage.

One by one, the guests stood.

Applause spread throughout the ballroom.

Arden stepped behind the microphone and waited until the room settled.

“My grandmother taught me that wealth does not create character,” she began. “It simply removes the need for some people to hide who they have always been.”

Blake moved away from the table.

“Arden, please. We need to talk privately.”

She raised one hand.

He stopped.

“Eight years ago, I married a man who sat beside me in a crowded roadside café during a thunderstorm. He told me that kindness mattered more than status and that his family would become my family.”

Her eyes moved toward Lenette and Corinne.

“I believed him.”

Blake’s face tightened.

“I concealed my position because I wanted a real marriage. I wanted to know whether I could be valued without my company, my inheritance, or my family name.”

Lenette stood.

“This is clearly a misunderstanding.”

Arden turned toward the screen.

“Then tonight is the perfect opportunity to correct it.”

The Records He Thought No One Would Find

The first financial document appeared behind her.

It showed a series of payments from Winslow Urban Development to a consulting company registered under Sloane’s name.

Additional files followed.

There were inflated construction invoices, unauthorized loans, altered reports, and company funds redirected toward private expenses.

Quiet conversations spread through the ballroom.

Sloane looked at Blake.

“You told me those payments were legitimate executive bonuses.”

“Do not speak,” he said sharply.

Arden continued.

“Over the past three years, Mr. Winslow used investment funds provided through Fairchild-controlled partnerships to secure loans without proper authorization. He also approved payments for services that were never delivered.”

Another document appeared.

“Lenette Winslow signed four agreements as a witness. Corinne Winslow received marketing payments for campaigns that were never completed.”

Corinne immediately stopped her livestream.

It was already too late.

Thousands of viewers had watched Arden enter the ballroom, and many had recorded the broadcast.

Warren looked toward his wife.

“You told me the documents I signed were related to my medical payments.”

Lenette avoided his eyes.

Graham joined Arden onstage carrying a thick gray folder.

“One month ago,” he explained, “Mr. Winslow attempted to use shares connected to Fairchild Capital as security for an additional loan.”

Blake pointed toward Arden.

“She is my wife. Those shares are part of our marriage.”

Graham remained calm.

“The shares were placed in a protected family trust twelve years before your wedding. You have never had legal authority over them.”

The screen changed again.

A recording from Blake’s office began playing.

Blake appeared beside his chief accountant.

“Arden never studies the documents I give her,” the recorded Blake said. “Tell her the papers concern the house. She will sign them.”

The real Blake went completely still.

The accountant’s voice followed.

“What happens if she asks questions?”

“She will not. She trusts me.”

Arden watched the recording without moving.

The dishonesty hurt.

But the confidence in Blake’s voice hurt even more.

He had believed her trust was not a gift but a weakness he could use.
