My Husband Ignored 23 Calls While I Gave Birth to Our Premature Twins—Then Arrived at the NICU With His Pregnant Girlfriend and Demanded a DNA Test. The Results Revealed a Family Secret No One Was Prepared For.
The Twenty-Three Calls He Never Answered
At 2:14 on a Tuesday morning, I was sitting on our bathroom floor in Chandler, Arizona, realizing that my babies were coming eight weeks earlier than expected.
My name is Natalie Prescott. I was thirty-three years old, pregnant with twins, and more frightened than I had ever been.
My husband, Blake Prescott, was supposed to be at a business conference in Las Vegas.
I reached for my phone and called him.
No answer.
I tried again while waiting for the ambulance. I called from the hospital hallway, then from the delivery room as nurses hurried around me.
By the time the doctors explained that I needed an emergency C-section, I had called Blake twenty-three times.
Every call went to voicemail.
“You’ve reached Blake Prescott. Leave a message if it’s important.”
I remember staring at the phone, wondering what could possibly be more important than his wife and unborn children.
At 4:51 a.m., our twins arrived.
My daughter, Maisie, weighed just over three pounds. Her brother, Hudson, was only a few ounces heavier.
Both needed immediate care in the neonatal intensive care unit.
I barely saw their faces before the medical team carried them away.
A nurse named Rebecca stayed beside me while I recovered.
“Is there someone we can contact for you?” she asked gently.
I looked at the empty chair where my husband should have been sitting.
“I’ve already tried everyone who matters,” I whispered.
Rebecca squeezed my hand.
“Then I’ll stay until you’re settled.”
That simple kindness nearly brought me to tears.
Four Days Between Two Incubators

The following days passed in a blur of medical updates, exhaustion, and quiet prayers.
Maisie needed help breathing. Hudson struggled with feeding.
I spent hours sitting between their incubators, watching their tiny chests rise and fall.
Sometimes I spoke to them through the small openings.
“Mommy’s here, sweetheart. You’re doing so well.”
I told them about the nursery waiting at home, the little stuffed animals on their shelves, and the sunlight that came through their bedroom window every morning.
I told them everything except the truth about their father.
Blake had not returned a single call.
He hadn’t even sent a message asking whether his children were alive and well.
Our marriage had been difficult for years, but I never imagined he could disappear when we needed him most.
We had spent nearly two years trying to become parents.
Three rounds of IVF. Countless appointments. More injections than I cared to remember.
Blake rarely attended those appointments.
He called the treatments my responsibility and insisted that I handle the expenses from my personal savings.
I accepted it because I wanted a family so badly.
Now, looking at my two beautiful babies, I understood that I already had one.
Even if their father chose not to be part of it.
The Visitors I Never Expected
On the fifth morning, I heard familiar footsteps approaching the NICU.
Blake had finally arrived.
For one brief second, I felt relieved.
Then I saw who was walking beside him.
His mother, Beverly Prescott, entered first, wearing an expensive cream-colored jacket and carrying a designer handbag.
Behind her was a young blonde woman in a white maternity dress.
Her hand rested on a noticeably rounded stomach.
Blake followed them, looking freshly groomed and completely unconcerned.
He didn’t ask how I was recovering.
He didn’t approach the incubators.
Instead, he gestured toward the woman.
“Natalie, this is Taryn.”
She offered an uncomfortable smile.
“I hope the babies are doing okay.”
I looked from her stomach to my husband’s face.
“Who is she, Blake?”
He straightened his jacket.
“Someone important to me. I thought it was time you knew.”
Beverly stepped toward the incubators and examined the babies through the glass.
“They’re awfully small,” she remarked. “Blake was a healthy, big baby. These two don’t look much like our family.”
I felt my hands tighten around the blanket on my lap.
“They were born at thirty-two weeks, Beverly. That’s why they’re small.”
She ignored my explanation.
Then Blake reached into his briefcase.
What he placed on the table beside my hospital bed made my stomach turn.
A paternity testing kit.
The Accusation That Changed Everything
Blake folded his arms.
“Two years of fertility treatments, Natalie. Two years of excuses. Then suddenly you’re pregnant with twins?”
I stared at him.
“You know exactly how they were conceived. We went through IVF.”
He shrugged.
“I know what you told me.”
My heart sank.
“What are you suggesting?”
He pointed toward the incubators.
“I’m not accepting responsibility for enormous hospital bills until I know those children are mine.”
He mentioned the estimated NICU expenses, which could exceed $180,000.
I couldn’t believe he was discussing money while our premature babies were still receiving medical care.
Beverly moved closer.
“Natalie, this doesn’t have to become embarrassing. Agree to the divorce, cooperate with the testing, and Blake may still help with the expenses.”
Then she glanced proudly at Taryn.
“At least we’re expecting another grandson. Someone who can carry on the Prescott name.”
Taryn lowered her eyes, but I noticed the small smile she tried to hide.
I wanted to remind them of every appointment I had attended alone, every treatment I had endured, and every dollar I had paid.
Instead, I looked at Blake.
“All right. Let’s do the test.”
He seemed surprised.
“You’re agreeing?”
“Yes. But I want everything handled through a certified laboratory, with the appropriate records reviewed.”
A physician standing near the doorway stepped forward.
Dr. Adrian Foster had been overseeing the twins’ care.
“Any formal testing will require proper consent and an accredited laboratory,” he explained.
Blake immediately agreed.
“Fine. Check whatever you need. You can review my medical history, too. I have nothing to hide.”
He signed the necessary authorizations.
I watched him do it without saying another word.
There was something Blake didn’t understand.
I had never been afraid of the truth.
The Morning the Results Arrived
The following morning, we gathered in a private consultation room.
Beverly sat beside Taryn, holding a cup of coffee.
Blake leaned back in his chair, looking far too pleased with himself.
I sat nearest the door, anxious to return to Maisie and Hudson.
Dr. Foster entered with the laboratory report.
