Hours Later, One Call From His Doctor Shattered Every Hope He Had Placed in His “Heir”—but That Still Wasn’t the Biggest Secret Waiting for Him

Part 2 of 3

“Is Dad coming with us later?”

Tessa swallowed.

“Not today, sweetheart.”

Nora nodded.

She did not cry.

She did not even look surprised.

That hurt Tessa more than tears would have.

Another message from Laurel appeared.

Grant knows about the baby. Now we need to deal with the money.

Tessa opened a second document.

The townhome was not the only financial problem.

Money had also been moved from an account Tessa believed was being preserved for Caleb and Nora’s future education.

Several transfers had gone directly to Grant’s mother.

Tessa stared at Colleen Whitmore’s name.

Suddenly, the situation looked different.

This had not been one man’s secret relationship.

Other people had helped him build the new life.

What Grant Had Really Signed Away

Tessa and the children landed in Charleston that afternoon.

Grant reached the Charlotte airport less than half an hour after their flight left.

By then there was nothing he could do.

He returned to Miles’s office and finally read the agreement carefully.

Every page.

Every clause.

Every sentence he had ignored earlier that morning.

Tessa had permission to establish the children’s primary residence in Charleston while maintaining an agreed parenting schedule.

Nothing had been hidden.

Nothing had been slipped into the paperwork at the last moment.

Grant had received every version.

He simply had not cared enough to read them.

Then Miles placed another folder in front of him.

Inside were four years of records involving the children.

Canceled school events.

Missed appointments.

Messages from Grant.

Can’t make Caleb’s school presentation.

Take Nora to the dentist without me.

Busy this weekend.

Tell them work came up.

Grant stared at the pages.

A single missed event had always seemed small.

Collected together, they told a different story.

They showed a father slowly disappearing from his children’s everyday lives.

“She planned this,” Grant said quietly.

Miles shook his head.

“She documented it.”

The Secret Colleen Helped Build

In Charleston, Tessa moved into a modest two-bedroom apartment near a neighborhood park.

It was smaller than the house she had left.

The balcony was narrow.

The kitchen was ordinary.

But the first night there, Tessa realized something important.

There was no tension in the rooms.

No whispered phone calls.

No wondering who was lying.

No children waiting for a father who had promised to be home at six and arrived after midnight.

The next morning Laurel called.

“We found more involving Colleen.”

Tessa stepped onto the balcony.

“How much more?”

A great deal.

Colleen had known about Brielle for months.

She had helped arrange furniture for the new property.

She had connected Grant with a real estate agent.

She had even moved money through an account she controlled.

Then Laurel found messages.

One from Colleen to Grant read:

Once the new baby arrives, you can finally start the life you should have had. Tessa will still have the other two.

The other two.

That was how their grandmother had described Caleb and Nora.

Another message showed Paige asking whether Grant was comfortable putting so much money into Brielle’s home.

Grant had replied:

When my son arrives, it’ll all be part of the same future anyway.

Tessa sat silently for several minutes.

Now she understood why Colleen had defended Grant’s absences so aggressively.

Why every expense involving Caleb and Nora had suddenly been questioned.

Why Tessa had spent months feeling as though her family had become an inconvenience.

Grant and his relatives had already been emotionally preparing for a replacement.

The Numbers Spoke for Her

Laurel asked whether Tessa wanted to use every message aggressively.

Tessa shook her head.

“I don’t want revenge. I want the money that belongs to the children returned, and I want financial stability that doesn’t depend on Grant’s promises.”

So they sent Grant numbers instead of angry accusations.

$108,000 connected to Brielle’s townhome.

$47,000 redirected from family accounts.

Additional payments for furniture, fees, travel, and deposits.

The documents were quiet.

That made them harder to dismiss.

Colleen went to Grant’s house after receiving notice of the financial claim.

“She’s trying to take everything from you.”

Grant looked down at the records.

“No. She’s asking for money that came out of our accounts.”

Colleen froze.

Grant pointed at one transaction.

“Why did you send Brielle eighteen thousand dollars?”

His mother stiffened.

“Because you were building a new life.”

“And Caleb and Nora?”

Colleen hesitated.

“Grant, that’s different.”

His expression changed.

“They’re my children.”

“Of course, but this baby was supposed to represent—”

“Don’t finish that sentence.”

For the first time, Grant heard his mother’s values without the comforting language she usually wrapped around them.

And he realized he had helped her make his own children feel secondary.

The Question Caleb Had Learned to Ask

Grant eventually requested a video call.

Tessa agreed.

Caleb appeared first.

“Hi, Dad.”

Grant smiled carefully.

“Hey, buddy. How’s Charleston?”

“Good. There’s a park near our apartment.”

Grant nodded.

“I miss you.”

Caleb paused.

Then he asked:

“Are you coming to my birthday?”

Grant’s chest tightened.

His son was not asking when they would move home.

He was not asking whether the family would get back together.

He was asking whether Grant would show up on one specific day.

That was the level of trust remaining between them.

“Yes. I’ll be there.”

Caleb studied him.

“For real?”

“For real.”

Nora appeared holding a drawing.

Three people stood beside the ocean.

Grant pointed at it.

“Who are they?”

“Mom, Caleb, and me.”

Grant looked at the empty space beside them.

He said only:

“It’s beautiful.”
