The driver’s door opened.

Adrian Keene stepped out.

That was when Nolan looked as though the ground had shifted beneath him.

The Man Nolan Had Blamed

Adrian walked around the Bentley and greeted me with an easy smile.

“How was the flight?”

“Interesting.”

His eyes moved toward Nolan.

The warmth disappeared from his expression.

Nolan stepped forward.

“Adrian.”

“Nolan.”

Then Nolan looked at the boys again.

“Who are they?”

I could hear the uncertainty in his voice now.

I had once imagined this moment hundreds of times.

Sometimes I imagined being angry.

Sometimes I imagined feeling victorious.

Instead, I simply felt tired.

“Boys, this is Mr. Voss. We used to work together.”

Tate smiled politely.

“Hi, Mr. Voss.”

Miles copied him.

Cole remained silent.

Nolan’s eyes returned to me.

“How old are they?”

I didn’t answer.

He counted silently anyway.

His face changed when he reached the obvious conclusion.

“They’re mine.”

It wasn’t a question.

Adrian stepped closer to the boys.

“Let’s get everyone into the car.”

Nolan suddenly looked at him.

“So you weren’t…”

Adrian understood immediately.

“No.”

One word.

Five years of misunderstanding collapsed with it.

Nolan looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

That question finally brought back some of the anger I thought I had left behind years ago.

“I tried.”

His mouth opened.

I continued before he could speak.

“You didn’t want an explanation. You wanted confirmation of what you had already decided.”

“Paige, I didn’t know.”

“Exactly.”

I helped Miles into the car.

Before closing the door, I looked back at Nolan.

“You didn’t know because you never listened.”

What He Discovered Two Days Later

Nolan had resources most people could barely imagine.

Within forty-eight hours, he had found enough information to understand nearly everything.

He appeared at my office on Monday morning.

My assistant barely had time to warn me before he entered.

He stopped inside the doorway and looked around.

The silver lettering behind my desk read:

VERDANT ARC TECHNOLOGIES.

The company I had founded four years earlier.

Nolan placed a folder on my desk.

His confidence was gone.

“I read the records.”

I remained seated.

“You shouldn’t have.”

“You were carrying three babies when I sent you away.”

I said nothing.

His voice became quieter.

“Adrian was your specialist.”

“Yes.”

“And you had complications when the boys arrived.”

I looked through the windows toward downtown Seattle.

That night had been one of the hardest nights of my life.

But I had survived it.

So had my sons.

That was all that mattered now.

Nolan lowered himself into the chair across from me.

“I thought he was the reason you left.”

“No, Nolan. Your refusal to trust me was the reason I left.”

He covered his face for several seconds.

Then he whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Five years earlier, those words might have changed everything.

Now they were simply words.

“I appreciate the apology.”

He looked up.

“I want to meet them.”

“You already did.”

“You know what I mean. They’re my children.”

I immediately heard the old Nolan returning.

Not the husband.

The businessman.

The man who believed ownership and love were interchangeable.

“Biology doesn’t give you permission to walk into their lives and rearrange everything.”

His jaw tightened.

“I have rights.”

I leaned forward.

“And they have a right to stability.”

Within days, attorneys became involved.

Then somehow the story reached the media.

Suddenly headlines described Nolan as a billionaire father who had only recently discovered he had three sons.

Some reports suggested I had hidden the boys because I wanted money.

That was the part I refused to tolerate.

So I called a press conference.

I stood before dozens of reporters in a deep emerald suit and told the truth.
