Rumors about celebrities being replaced by clones or lookalikes are far from rare, but the theory surrounding Melania Trump and a supposed body double has persisted for years—and continues to spark curiosity.

Similar conspiracies have followed the likes of Avril Lavigne, accused of being replaced by a double who assumed her identity, and Jamie Foxx, whose dramatic health scare led to claims that he wasn’t the same person afterward. Even Diddy faced cloning rumors after his arrest over allegations involving racketeering and sexual assault.

While many public figures have been at the center of these bizarre claims, Melania Trump—former First Lady—has recently found herself back in the spotlight as speculation about her apparent stand-in resurfaces.

According to many online, Melania Trump has stepped away from public appearances at times and been substituted by an actress or lookalike to represent her in official events.

One social media user commented: “Has there been another sitting President in the Televisual age that’s been quite so brazen as to use a body double of the First Lady on the campaign trail? I think not. Up there with my favourite conspiracy theories. The evidence is well… compelling.”

Another wrote: “We know this isn’t Melania because Melania doesn’t smile.”

Someone else theorized: “Way way too cozy. Melania doesn’t let Trump touch her. It was a body double. Dead giveaway also the trench coat and sunglasses.”

When did the Melania Trump body double theory begin?

The rumors trace back to 2017, when then-President Donald Trump visited Secret Service agents in Florida following hurricane devastation. A video that circulated from the event showed Melania standing stiffly beside Trump, wearing oversized sunglasses, as he said, “My wife Melania…who happens to be right here.”

It didn’t take long for the internet to pounce, and since then, the theory that Melania has a body double has remained a staple of online speculation.

When have people claimed to spot Melania’s alleged body double?

2019

In March 2019, the Trumps visited Alabama after a deadly tornado hit the area. Observers pointed out differences in Melania’s appearance—her height, her teeth, and the shape of her nose—claiming they didn’t match the real Melania.

2020

During Trump’s campaign stop in Florida, Melania appeared unusually cheerful, leading some to believe it must have been a stand-in. Her appearances on the White House lawn and in Nashville further fueled speculation.

Filmmaker Zack Bornstein even tweeted: “The only thing I’ll miss from this administration is them swapping in new Melanias and just pretending we won’t notice like a 4-year-old with a guppy.”

A debate followed online, with users posting things like: “Looks nothing like her. It has to have been the real one at the debate – with the hand snatching and exuding utter misery. This is someone else entirely.”

Following Donald Trump’s indictment in New York, Melania was photographed at Mar-a-Lago, and some noticed what they thought were differences around her eyes and jawline.

2025

Speculation spiked again earlier this year, especially after her appearance in January during Trump’s inauguration. Likewise, her presence alongside Trump at a November event in West Palm Beach reignited claims.

Conspiracy theorists also suggested Melania didn’t attend Pope Francis’ funeral herself, insisting that a lookalike was used. The First Lady wore a black veil covering her face, which led many to believe it was a disguise for someone else.

Is there any truth to the theory that Melania Trump uses a body double?

Despite the rumors, there’s no evidence supporting the body double claims. Jonathan Wackrow, a former Secret Service agent, told CNN: “The United States Secret Service doesn’t use body doubles.”

He added: “Mrs. Trump’s lead agent is a woman … and she happens to look a little like her, but physically, she is much shorter.” Wackrow noted that the agent had also served under President Obama’s family, which made her a good fit for the Trump detail.

“These are the kinds of things that are considered, not whether an agent could pass for the First Lady,” he clarified.

Although both Trump and Melania’s press secretary have denied the claims, the White House has never issued a formal response.

Back in 2019, Trump addressed the speculation after a trip to survey tornado damage in Alabama, tweeting: “The Fake News photoshopped pictures of Melania, then propelled conspiracy theories that it’s actually not her by my side in Alabama and other places. They are only getting more deranged with time!”

The topic also came up on The View, where Ana Navarro-Cardenas joked: “Let’s have fun with Melania. She’s beautiful, and we’re doing this in jest.”

Abby Huntsman pushed back, asking: “Does that make it better?”

Stephanie Grisham, Melania’s spokesperson at the time, issued a statement condemning the comments, saying the episode “went beyond the petty mean-girl spirit that we’ve grown accustomed to.”

Grisham added in an email to AP: “People died, people lost family, people are hurting in Alabama. I personally watched the president and first lady hug, listen to and comfort people who had lost everything—and the ‘ladies’ of The View instead chose to laugh and joke about a body-double conspiracy.”
