Part 1 of 3

PART 1: THE WEDDING GIFT MY GRANDFATHER NEVER GAVE MY HUSBAND

“DON’T YOU DARE TOUCH THAT ENVELOPE!”

My husband shouted those words at my 82-year-old grandfather less than twenty minutes after pushing me into the swimming pool at our wedding reception.

I stood beside the water in my ruined wedding dress, shaking beneath a tablecloth my maid of honor had wrapped around my shoulders. A few of Ryan’s college friends were still holding their phones, although nobody was laughing anymore. Grandpa Walter stood near the patio doors with a brown envelope in his hand, watching the man I’d just married.

“Ryan,” Grandpa said, “you’ve embarrassed my granddaughter quite enough for one afternoon.”

Ryan looked at the envelope again.

“Walter, seriously. Don’t make this worse.”

Until that moment, I’d been too stunned to think about anything beyond getting out of my wet dress. But the look on Ryan’s face troubled me. He seemed more frightened of what Grandpa might do with that envelope than of what he’d just done to me.

And I knew exactly what was supposed to be inside it.

THE JOKE THAT WASN’T FUNNY

Ten minutes earlier, I’d been standing beside the pool with Ryan, smiling for photographs. Our reception was being held at a beautiful venue outside Sacramento, with about 120 guests gathered around the patio and gardens.

I’d spent nearly a year planning that wedding. My mother had helped with the flowers, my best friend Nicole had organized the bridesmaids, and Grandpa Walter had walked me down the aisle.

My father had passed away when I was sixteen. Grandpa had been there for every important milestone since, and having him beside me that morning meant more than I could explain.

Ryan knew that.

He also knew how much the wedding mattered to me.

We’d been together five years. He was charming, funny, and the kind of man who could walk into a room full of strangers and have everybody laughing within minutes. I used to love that about him.

Sometimes his jokes went too far, but whenever I complained, he’d put an arm around me and say, “Come on, Emily. You know I’d never do anything to really upset you.”

I believed him.

At the reception, Ryan’s friends had been unusually interested in taking pictures near the pool. I noticed Matt, his former college roommate, holding his phone at an odd angle, but I assumed he was recording the celebration.

Ryan came up beside me.

“Babe, one more picture over here.”

I turned toward him, smiling.

“Haven’t we taken enough already?”

“Trust me. This one’s going to be memorable.”

He put his arm around my waist.

Then, before I understood what he was doing, he pushed me backward.

I landed in the pool with my wedding gown spreading around me. The soaked fabric became heavy almost immediately, and I struggled to get my feet beneath me.

I could hear people shouting.

Then laughter.

Ryan’s laughter was the clearest.

By the time I reached the edge, Nicole and one of the venue employees were helping me out. My hair was dripping, my mascara had run, and the lace on one sleeve had torn.

I looked up at my husband.

He was laughing so hard he could barely speak.

“Oh, come on, Emily! You should’ve seen your face!”

I stared at him.

“You pushed me into the pool.”

“It was a joke, sweetheart.”

“I’m wearing my wedding dress.”

He gestured toward the building.

“You’ve got another dress. Just change.”

Something about that answer bothered me even before I understood why.

He hadn’t sounded surprised that I was upset. He sounded annoyed that I wasn’t cooperating.

THE ENVELOPE IN GRANDPA’S HAND

Grandpa Walter came toward us, leaning on his cane.

At eighty-two, he still insisted on driving himself everywhere and regularly complained that restaurants served portions too small for what they charged. That morning, he’d made everyone laugh by declaring the wedding champagne too expensive to taste like anything.

But he wasn’t smiling now.

He looked at my dress, then at Ryan.

“Did she know you were going to do that?”

Ryan shrugged.

“Of course not. That’s the whole point of a prank.”

Grandpa nodded slowly.

“I see.”

Then he reached into his jacket and removed the brown envelope.

Three months earlier, Grandpa had told us he wanted to give me $75,000 toward our first home. He’d sold a small piece of land he’d owned for decades and wanted me to enjoy part of the proceeds while he was still around.

When he told us, I cried.

Ryan immediately began searching for houses.

Grandpa had insisted that the gift arrangements wouldn’t be finalized until after the wedding. He wanted us to enjoy the ceremony first and make our housing decisions carefully afterward.

Now he unfolded a letter from the envelope.

Ryan’s expression changed.

“Walter, what are you doing?”

Grandpa looked at him.

“Reconsidering a few things.”

“You can’t just change your mind.”

“About my own money?”

Ryan stepped closer.

“We already started looking at houses based on that gift.”

Grandpa held his gaze.

“And my granddaughter is standing here soaking wet because you thought humiliating her would be entertaining.”

Ryan glanced toward the guests.

“Can we discuss this privately?”

“You didn’t seem particularly concerned about privacy a few minutes ago.”

Then Grandpa tore the letter in half.

Ryan stared.

“Are you serious?”

Grandpa tore it again.

“Completely.”

I watched the pieces fall into his hand.

Oddly enough, I wasn’t thinking about the money. I was thinking about how quickly my husband had stopped laughing.

THE QUESTION NOBODY WANTED TO ANSWER

Ryan turned toward me.

“Emily, tell him he’s being ridiculous.”

I looked down at my dress. Water was still dripping from the hem onto the stone patio.

“You planned to push me into a pool on our wedding day, and you’re worried about the money?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“That’s not what I said. This whole thing is getting blown out of proportion.”

Nicole stepped beside me.

“Ryan, just stop talking for a minute.”

He ignored her.

“Everybody was laughing until Walter made a scene.”

I looked around.

Nobody was laughing now.

Matt stood several feet away, studying his phone. Two other college friends, Jason and Kyle, were avoiding my eyes.

I turned toward Matt.

“Did you know Ryan was going to do this?”

He hesitated.

“Emily, it was supposed to be funny.”

My stomach tightened.

“How long did you know?”

Matt looked at Ryan.

Grandpa spoke quietly.

“She asked you a question, son.”

Matt swallowed.

“A couple of weeks.”

I looked at Ryan.

“You planned this for weeks?”

He sighed.

“We talked about it. You’re making it sound like some terrible conspiracy.”

“You knew I’d be wearing my wedding dress.”

“You brought another one.”

I stared at him.

I’d bought a shorter white reception dress because my gown was heavy and I wanted something comfortable for dancing later.

Ryan knew about it.

“That’s why you thought it was okay?”

“I figured you’d change and we’d all have a funny story.”

I looked toward the phones in his friends’ hands.

“Were you planning to post the video?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Matt said, “Ryan mentioned TikTok.”

Ryan snapped, “I said maybe, Matt.”

I felt my face grow hot despite the cold water soaking my clothes.

“So you wanted a video of me falling into a pool in my wedding dress?”

Ryan spread his hands.

“It’s the kind of thing people laugh about years later.”

“Who was supposed to be laughing, Ryan?”

He looked confused.

“What?”

“Me? Was I supposed to find it funny?”

For once, he didn’t have an answer.

THE MOMENT I STOPPED EXCUSING HIM

My mother arrived from inside the reception hall, where she’d been speaking with the caterer.

She stopped when she saw me.

“Emily, honey, what happened?”

Nicole answered before I could.

“Ryan pushed her into the pool.”

Mom stared at him.

“On purpose?”

Ryan threw up his hands.

“It was a prank. Can everybody please stop acting like something terrible happened?”

Mom took off one of her shoes.

I caught her wrist.

“Mom, please.”

“My feet hurt,” she said.

I knew my mother well enough to understand that her feet weren’t the problem.

Grandpa almost smiled, and that nearly made me cry.

My father should have been there. I kept thinking about how he’d looked in old photographs, standing beside Mom with his hand resting gently on her shoulder.

Grandpa had tried so hard to make sure I never felt alone after Dad passed away.
