Important reason Kate Middleton never revealed what type of cancer she had after her diagnosis

When Kate Middleton revealed her cancer diagnosis on March 22, 2024, an outpouring of support followed. However, the palace made it clear why she chose not to disclose the specific type of cancer she had.

Her announcement came after months of speculation, as concerns and conspiracy theories circulated. Once she explained her absence from royal duties, the hashtag #WhereIsKateMiddleton quickly disappeared. Now, as the anniversary of her announcement approaches, we reflect on why her diagnosis had such an impact and why she chose to keep certain details private.

Prince William’s Reaction to Kate’s Diagnosis

Although Kate shared her diagnosis with the public last March, it wasn’t until recently that we learned how Prince William responded to the news.

Former royal aide Jason Knauf spoke to 60 Minutes Australia about his experience working with the Prince and Princess of Wales. He revealed that hearing Kate’s diagnosis was incredibly difficult for William.

“It was awful, absolutely awful. It’s the lowest I’ve ever seen him,” Jason said.

He also shared that the couple delayed making the news public because they wanted to first discuss it with their children and face the challenge as a family.

Why Kate Middleton Chose Not to Reveal Her Cancer Type

Kensington Palace addressed public and media inquiries about the type of cancer Kate had, making it clear that they wouldn’t be sharing further details.

“The Princess has a right to medical privacy, as we all do,” the palace stated.

Now that Kate is in remission, the royal family has chosen not to disclose additional medical details, including the stage of her cancer. A similar approach was taken when King Charles announced his own cancer diagnosis in February 2024.

At the time, Buckingham Palace stated:

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

Kate Middleton’s Message About Her Diagnosis

In a heartfelt video released in March 2024, Kate sat on a wooden bench in the sunlight as she addressed the public.

“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present,” she revealed.

“My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment. This, of course, came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.”

By September, she provided another update, sharing her growing sense of optimism.

“Despite all that has gone before, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life. William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time.

Everyone’s kindness, empathy, and compassion have been truly humbling. To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, can come light, so let that light shine bright.”

Kate’s Strength Through Recovery

Ahead of Trooping the Colour in June, Kate shared an update on her recovery, admitting that while she had “good days and bad days,” she was happy to attend the event. Many praised her resilience as she stood on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

“I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days. On those bad days, you feel weak, tired, and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.”

In January 2025, Kate announced she was in remission and looking forward to the future.
