Part 2 of 3

Standing before me was simply a daughter remembering her father.

“How much do I owe you?” she asked.

I handed her my invoice.

She studied it.

“That’s all?”

“That’s the agreed price.”

She reached for her checkbook.

“I’d like to give you something extra.”

I shook my head.

“There’s something more important you need to see.”

I handed her a copy of the document Trevor had wanted me to sign.

Then I pointed to the purchasing company.

Her expression changed.

“Whitcomb Holdings?”

“Do you recognize it?”

She nodded slowly.

“Trevor told me these papers were related to insurance.”

Her hands began trembling.

“Wesley, I signed an authorization yesterday.”

She looked toward the house.

“He said everything would be finalized tomorrow.”

Chapter 6: The Truth Behind the Perfect Partnership

I recommended that Vivian contact an independent attorney immediately.

She hired Cecilia Hartwell, a business lawyer with no connection to Trevor or her company.

By the following afternoon, the proposed transfer had been stopped.

The Porsche remained safely in Vivian’s garage.

But the discovery raised a much larger question.

Why had Trevor been so determined to acquire the vehicle?

Cecilia began reviewing the paperwork.

The Porsche was not merely an old sports car.

Its documented restoration history made it unusually valuable to collectors.

Records from Germany confirmed that Heinrich Bauer had personally supervised the restoration, using custom components that were carefully documented.

With that history established, the car could be worth several times Trevor’s proposed purchase price.

But the investigation didn’t end there.

Vivian’s financial advisers began reviewing transactions Trevor had approved over the previous two years.

They discovered investments involving companies connected to him, questionable valuations, and payments that had never been properly explained.

The total amount requiring investigation exceeded eight million dollars.

Vivian called me one evening.

Her voice sounded completely different from the confident tone I remembered.

“Wesley, I trusted that man for almost twenty years.”

I remained silent.

“He worked with my father. He helped me run the company when Dad was gone. I thought he was family.”

“Trusting someone doesn’t mean you stop asking questions,” I replied gently.

She sighed.

“I know that now.”

Then she said something I hadn’t expected.

“I’m sorry for the way I treated you when we first met.”

“You don’t owe me an apology for a joke.”

“It wasn’t just a joke. I looked at your clothes and your hands and decided you couldn’t possibly know something my expensive specialists didn’t.”

I thought about my father.

He had spent forty years repairing engines without ever owning an expensive watch or a luxury car.

“My dad used to say that a person’s hands tell you what they’ve worked for, not what they’re worth.”

Vivian was quiet for several seconds.

“Your father sounds like a wise man.”

“He was.”

Chapter 7: Two Million Dollars Couldn’t Buy My Silence

A week later, Trevor appeared at my repair shop.

He arrived alone in a dark luxury sedan.

I was working on a delivery truck when he walked inside.

“Mr. Brooks, I think we’ve gotten off on the wrong foot.”

I put down my wrench.

“What can I do for you?”

He placed a thick envelope on my workbench.

“You can help us put this misunderstanding behind us.”

Inside was a proposed payment agreement.

Two million dollars.

I stared at the amount.

That money could pay off my mortgage, replace the shop’s roof, and secure Sadie’s education.

For a brief moment, I imagined how much easier our lives could become.

Then I read the conditions.

I would have to withdraw my technical report and state that the incorrect component might have been installed many years earlier.

In other words, I would have to contradict my own evidence.

“You want me to change what I found?”

Trevor adjusted his jacket.

“I want you to acknowledge that mechanical evidence can be interpreted differently.”

“Not when the measurements and records are this clear.”

He leaned forward.

“Two million dollars is a remarkable opportunity for someone in your position.”

I looked past him.

Sadie’s wooden race car sat beside my toolbox.

The same little car my father had made with his own hands.

I thought about what I would tell my daughter if she ever asked where that money came from.

I pushed the envelope back.

“I’m not interested.”

Trevor’s smile disappeared.

“Think carefully, Wesley. You have a daughter to take care of.”

The remark unsettled me.

I kept my voice calm.

“I am thinking about my daughter. That’s exactly why my answer is no.”

After he left, I called Cecilia and told her everything.

She advised me to document the encounter and report the pressure through the appropriate legal channels.

For several weeks, I took extra precautions around Sadie’s school and our daily routine.

I didn’t want her frightened.

But children notice more than adults realize.

One evening, while we were eating dinner, she looked at me across the table.

“Daddy, are you worried about something?”

I smiled gently.

“Why do you ask, sweetheart?”

“Because you keep looking out the window.”

I set down my fork.

“Someone wanted me to say something that wasn’t true. I told him I wouldn’t.”

She considered that.

“Was he mad?”

“He wasn’t happy.”

Sadie reached into her backpack and placed her little wooden car beside my plate.

“You can keep this with you, Daddy. Grandpa said it could make it through any road.”

I wrapped my arms around her.

And in that moment, I knew I had already made the right decision.

Chapter 8: When the Truth Changed Everything

The months that followed were difficult for everyone.

Trevor was removed from his management responsibilities while independent investigators examined the company’s records.

Several questionable transactions were stopped.

Some funds were recovered, while other financial matters remained under legal review.

Vivian had to make painful decisions.

She sold certain business assets, introduced outside financial oversight, and personally met with employees affected by the company’s restructuring.

She also accepted responsibility for allowing too much authority to rest in one person’s hands.

As for me, I provided the photographs, measurements, restoration records, and written statements requested by the investigators.

I answered every question as accurately as I could.

When I didn’t know something, I said so.

I wasn’t interested in becoming famous.

I wanted to return to fixing cars and raising my daughter.

Eventually, life began to settle down.

Then, one bright morning in early spring, Vivian walked into my shop.

She wasn’t wearing an expensive business suit.

There were no assistants following her.
