I Rushed Home to Tell My Husband I Had Inherited $24 Million, a Manhattan Tower, and the House We Lived In—Instead, I Found Him Waiting With His Mistress, Divorce Papers, and My Packed Suitcases, Completely Unaware He Was Throwing Me Out of My Own Home

Part 2 of 3

She looked at the suitcases.

“You planned this in front of our children.”

“I handled it badly.”

“You handled it honestly,” Claire replied. “For the first time, I can see exactly who you are.”

Brooke touched the sapphire earrings.

Claire noticed the movement.

“Those belonged to my mother.”

Brooke’s hand dropped.

“Preston said they were an old gift.”

“They were a gift from my father to my mother on their twentieth anniversary.”

Brooke quickly removed them.

“I did not know.”

She held them toward Claire, but Mr. Pembroke stepped forward with a small property envelope.

“I will document their return.”

Brooke looked humiliated.

“Is that really necessary?”

“It protects everyone involved,” he said calmly.

Preston ran a hand across his face.

“This has become absurd.”

Claire almost laughed.

For years, he had called her concerns dramatic.

Now that facts no longer favored him, the entire situation had become absurd.

The Moment His Voice Changed

Preston stepped closer.

His expression softened too quickly.

“Claire, listen to me. Today has been overwhelming for both of us. We should not make permanent decisions while emotions are high.”

Claire studied him.

The warmth in his eyes looked practiced.

“An hour ago, you were ready to send me away.”

“I was confused.”

“You prepared legal documents.”

“I made a terrible mistake.”

Brooke turned toward him in disbelief.

“A mistake?”

Preston ignored her.

“We have history, Claire. We have children. We can fix this.”

Claire understood immediately.

He was no longer looking at his wife.

He was looking at twenty-four million dollars, a Manhattan property, and a house he had just discovered he did not own.

“I was coming home to tell you everything,” she said.

His face brightened.

“Then you still trust me.”

“I did when I turned onto this street.”

The hope vanished from his expression.

“Claire—”

“But then I saw my suitcases.”

Brooke gave a bitter laugh.

“So that is all it takes? She inherits money, and suddenly you remember your marriage?”

Preston’s jaw tightened.

“This does not concern you.”

Brooke stared at him.

“You asked me to move into this house.”

“Not now.”

“No, now is exactly when we discuss it.”

She looked at Claire.

“He told me you refused to work. He said you spent every dollar he earned and never supported his company.”

Claire felt anger rise, but her voice stayed steady.

“I worked almost every night. I prepared invoices for his company. I reviewed expenses. I used my savings to keep his first office open.”

Brooke turned toward Preston.

“You told me she knew nothing about the business.”

Preston’s silence returned.

This time, Brooke understood it too.

No One Was Being Removed Except the Truth

Mr. Pembroke opened his portfolio.

“Mr. Holloway, Mrs. Holloway has requested that you stay elsewhere this evening.”

Preston looked stunned.

“You are removing me from my own home?”

Claire stepped between him and the door.

“No. I am refusing to let you remove me from mine.”

His expression hardened.

“I have lived here for twelve years.”

Mr. Pembroke remained calm.

“And this afternoon, you attempted to exclude the legal owner from the property.”

Preston looked at Claire.

“You do not understand what you are doing.”

“I understand more than I did this morning.”

He lowered his voice.

“Your aunt was not the generous woman you believe she was.”

Claire felt a chill.

“What does that mean?”

Preston glanced toward the windows of the upstairs study.

Then he looked back at her.

“Ask your attorney what Beatrice was protecting you from.”

Before Claire could respond, he walked toward his car.

Brooke remained on the porch.

She wrapped her coat tightly around herself, suddenly looking far less confident.

“Brooke,” Preston called.

She did not move.

“I need my handbag,” she said quietly.

One of the officers escorted her inside.

Preston waited beside his car, staring down the street.

Claire turned toward Mr. Pembroke.

“What did he mean about my aunt?”

The attorney’s expression became serious.

“Beatrice was a careful woman.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No,” he admitted. “But I believe she expected you to discover certain information in stages.”

“Did she know Preston was seeing someone else?”

Mr. Pembroke paused.

Claire felt her stomach tighten.

“She suspected he was hiding important matters from you.”

“Why did she not tell me?”

“Perhaps she feared you would defend him before you were prepared to question him.”

Claire remembered the letters Beatrice had sent over the years.

Do you keep copies of the documents you sign?

Do you have an account in your own name?

Does Preston respect the work you do?

Claire had always considered the questions intrusive.

Now they felt like warnings she had failed to understand.

The Secret Brooke Left Behind

Brooke returned carrying her handbag.

She walked past Claire, then stopped near the bottom step.

“I did not know he planned to do this in front of the children.”

Claire looked at her.

“You still planned to move into their mother’s home.”

Brooke lowered her eyes.

“He told me you had agreed to separate.”

“Did you believe everything else he told you?”

Brooke looked toward Preston.

For the first time, fear rather than affection crossed her face.

“I believed what was convenient.”

It was the most honest thing she had said.

Preston opened the passenger door.

“Brooke, get in.”

She walked toward the car, then turned back.

“He rents a storage unit on Fairfield Avenue.”

Preston froze.

“Brooke.”

She continued.
