I Entered Our Separation Meeting in My Coast Guard Uniform With the Baby Daughter My Billionaire Husband Never Knew Existed—Then a Hidden 41% Stake and a Call From His Family Estate Revealed That Our Missing Messages Were Only the Beginning…

Part 2 of 3

“Blake may have interfered with the messages,” he said, “but I made it easy for you to believe I had abandoned you.”

That admission unsettled Meredith more than an excuse would have.

The Julian she had left would have spoken about investors, deadlines and the thousands of employees who depended on him. This man appeared to be hearing, perhaps for the first time, how thoroughly his ambition had entered their home.

“I failed you before Blake ever touched a message,” he continued.

Wren made a soft sound, and Julian’s expression changed.

“May I come closer?”

Meredith hesitated, then nodded. “Slowly.”

He approached until only a few feet remained between them. Wren studied his face with the serious concentration unique to babies.

Julian offered a trembling smile.

“Hello, Wren. I’m Julian.”

Not Dad. Not Father. He claimed nothing he had not yet earned.

Wren waved one small fist, and Julian covered his mouth, turning away for a moment until he could speak again.

“I missed everything.”

“You missed her first night home, the way she smiles at ceiling lights, and every evening she refused to sleep unless I walked with her. You missed the worry and the joy. You missed who I became while caring for her.”

“I don’t know how to apologize for something I didn’t know was happening.”

“Start by finding out why you didn’t know.”

The conference room door opened.

Evelyn stood in the doorway, her composure thinner than before.

“If you’re discussing missing communications,” she said, “you should know Blake was not the only person who thought this marriage interfered with the company.”

The Family’s Old Rules

Julian’s attention shifted to his mother.

“What did you do?”

Evelyn entered and closed the door. She admitted that, during the largest corporate acquisition in Cross Technologies’ history, she had allowed Blake to delay and filter personal calls so Julian could remain focused.

“He said he was protecting your schedule,” she explained. “I never told him to conceal a pregnancy.”

“You gave him authority to separate me from my wife,” Julian replied.

“I was protecting what your father built.”

“My father built a company, not a cage.”

Evelyn’s polished expression faltered.

“Your father believed tenderness made people weak,” she said.

“And you believed him.”

Her answer came almost too softly to hear.

“I endured him.”

For a moment, she was no longer the commanding family matriarch Meredith had known. She was simply an older woman who had spent decades calling control a form of protection because admitting the truth would have required her to question her entire life.

Meredith looked from mother to son.

“Perhaps everyone in this family has been hiding old pain behind the word duty.”

Wren interrupted the silence with a cheerful sound, interested in nothing more consequential than the silver button on Meredith’s uniform.

Evelyn looked at her granddaughter.

“She’s beautiful.”

“Her name is Wren,” Meredith said.

Evelyn nodded. “Wren.”

Then she revealed that Blake had kept private files at the Cross family estate during the acquisition, claiming the corporate network had been compromised. Those archives might show who had instructed him and what he had intercepted.

Before Julian could respond, a receptionist delivered an unmarked brown envelope addressed to Commander Meredith Calloway in familiar handwriting.

Blake Rowan’s.

Inside was a photograph of Meredith leaving a medical clinic while visibly expecting Wren. Someone had been watching her months earlier.

There was also a short note:

Ask Evelyn what Harrison placed in the family trust.

Julian turned toward his mother.

“What trust?”

Evelyn gripped the back of a chair.

“Your father created several private arrangements before he passed away.”

“What did he arrange?”

Her eyes settled on Wren.

“If this baby is your daughter, she may control more of Cross Technologies than you do.”

The Cross fortune had always seemed too large to be moved by one person, much less by an infant sleeping against her mother’s uniform. Yet Evelyn explained that Harrison Cross had created a succession clause designed to keep the company within his direct family line.

Julian retained control only while he remained the sole heir. Upon the birth of his first child within a recognized marriage, a protected portion of voting authority would transfer into that child’s trust.

“How much?” Julian asked.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Forty-one percent.”
