Moral Stories Behind Closed Doors

I Called My Husband 31 Times as His Mother Fought for Her Final Hours—He Told Me to Stop “Creating Drama” While Vacationing With His Mistress… He Came Home Expecting Dinner, Never Imagining What His Mother Had Left Behind Would Destroy Everything He Had Spent a Lifetime Building

Part 2 of 3

But as Meredith turned through the older pages, she noticed a series of large deposits made over many years. The money had come from Vance Commercial Group, the construction company owned by Uncle Douglas.

“Why was Douglas sending money into Beatrice’s account?” she asked.

Everett’s expression grew serious.

“That is the question Beatrice wanted you to investigate.”

A Marriage Built on Hidden Accounts

Meredith checked into a modest hotel near the waterfront rather than returning home.

She opened an old tablet that Preston had once connected to his work email. He had never removed the account, and years of archived messages remained available.

Meredith searched for the name Vance Commercial Group.

Dozens of emails appeared.

The earliest messages dated back nearly eighteen years, when Preston worked as a purchasing supervisor for Northstar Infrastructure. His position allowed him to recommend outside contractors for valuable projects.

One message from Douglas read:

Preston, the payment for guiding the Harbor Point contract in our direction has been transferred to the account you provided.

Another said:

Your mother’s account remains the safest place. No one at Northstar will connect it to you.

Meredith’s stomach tightened.

The deposits in Beatrice’s bankbook matched the dates of those messages.

Preston had used his mother’s personal account to hide secret payments from his uncle’s company. He had assumed Beatrice would never understand the transactions.

But she had understood.

Six months earlier, Beatrice had quietly restricted the account and contacted Everett. She had preserved the records because she feared Preston would leave Meredith with nothing once she was gone.

Meredith also discovered recent hotel receipts and photographs from Preston’s trip.

He was not in Chicago.

He was vacationing in Key West with a woman named Sloane Parker, a marketing consultant from his company.

Meredith saved every record.

Then she opened a blank email and sent the evidence to Everett.

The Ring on the Table

Two days later, Preston finally returned home.

By then, Meredith had removed her clothes, personal documents, photographs, and everything that truly belonged to her.

She left only three items on the dining table: her wedding ring, signed divorce papers, and one photocopied page from Beatrice’s bankbook.

From the hotel, Meredith watched the living room through the camera once installed to monitor Beatrice’s safety.

Preston entered carrying expensive luggage and wearing the relaxed expression of a man returning from a pleasant vacation.

“Meredith?” he called. “Why is the house dark?”

He switched on the lights and immediately noticed the empty shelves.

His confidence disappeared when he reached the dining table.

At first, he laughed at the divorce papers.

“She’ll come back,” he muttered. “She always comes back.”

Then he saw the bank record.

His face lost its color.

He grabbed his phone and called Douglas.

“She found the old account,” Preston said. “I don’t know how, but she has the records.”

He paced across the room.

“We need to get everything back before she shows anyone.”

Meredith turned off the camera.

She had heard enough.

The Family Meeting

The following afternoon, Preston demanded that Meredith attend a family meeting at Beatrice’s former home.

He believed he was calling her into a room where his relatives could pressure her into surrendering the records.

Meredith arrived with Everett beside her.

Douglas stood near the fireplace. Lorraine sat with her arms crossed. Preston waited at the table with a prepared settlement agreement.

“You took private financial documents from my mother’s belongings,” Preston said. “Return them, sign this agreement, and we can avoid an ugly legal dispute.”

Meredith remained standing.

“The documents belonged to Beatrice, and she gave them to me through her attorney.”

Douglas stepped forward.

“You have no right to that money.”

Everett opened his briefcase.

“Under Beatrice Hale’s legally witnessed will, Meredith is the sole beneficiary of the estate.”

Preston stared at him.

“I’m her son.”

“You were intentionally excluded,” Everett replied.

Preston pushed back his chair.

“She would never do that.”

Meredith placed Beatrice’s letter on the table.

“She knew about Sloane. She knew you planned to leave me after taking her savings. She also knew you had used her account for years.”

Lorraine turned toward Preston.

“Who is Sloane?”

Meredith took out her phone and played part of the final call.

The sound of waves filled the room. Then came Sloane’s laughter, followed by Preston’s angry voice telling Meredith to stop bothering him.

Lorraine’s expression changed from suspicion to disbelief.

“You were on vacation while your mother was leaving us?”

Preston looked toward Douglas for support.

Instead, Douglas stared at the photocopied bank record Meredith had placed before him.

His hands began to tremble.

“This proves nothing,” he said.

“The emails prove the rest,” Meredith replied. “Every payment, every contract, and every instruction to use Beatrice’s account has been preserved.”

Preston pointed toward his uncle.

“Douglas arranged everything. I only followed his instructions.”

Douglas’s face hardened.

“You asked for those payments.”

Within seconds, the two men who had protected each other for years began blaming one another.

Meredith watched quietly.

Their loyalty had never been real. It existed only while their secrets remained profitable.

The Man from Northstar

A firm knock interrupted the argument.
