Gene Hackman’s friend says the actor was “bothered” about aging

Gene Hackman, an Oscar-winning legend, earned two Academy Awards for The French Connection (1972) and Unforgiven (1993). His last film, Welcome to Mooseport (2004), marked the end of his Hollywood career.

Hackman had three children with Faye Maltese before their 1986 divorce. In 1991, he married pianist Betsy Arakawa, and they remained together.

In his final years, Hackman focused on staying healthy, practicing yoga, pilates, and cycling regularly. His friend Stuart Ashman recalled that Hackman, despite aging concerns, remained active and fit.

“He didn’t like being old”

FBI agent **Stephen Marshall**, a close friend of **Gene Hackman**, revealed the actor struggled with **aging** and avoided public appearances. Hackman refused to attend a **Night Moves** screening due to health issues, saying he **hated seeing himself age on film**.

In public, Hackman preferred to keep a low profile, once admitting: _“People now say, ‘Hey, that’s Gene Hackman… and he got so old.’”_

His passion for **golf** remained strong, though he was often frustrated by his performance—especially when his wife, **Betsy Arakawa**, picked up the game faster.

Rest in peace, **Gene Hackman & Betsy Arakawa**.
