“Her aircraft was damaged before she left that valley.”

Someone near the end of the table quietly asked:

“You mean Tessa did that?”

Dane nodded.

“I spent seven years wondering who Night Lantern was.”

He looked at me again.

“I never imagined she was Gordon’s daughter.”

Then Dane straightened and raised his hand in a formal salute.

His voice shook.

“You helped bring eight of us home. I have wanted to thank you for seven years.”

I could barely answer.

“You don’t owe me anything.”

“Yes,” Dane replied softly. “I do.”

Dad Still Refused to Believe It

The strangest part was not Dane recognizing me.

It was my father’s reaction.

Instead of being proud, he looked embarrassed.

The entire story contradicted the version of me he had spent decades telling people.

“There must be some misunderstanding,” Dad said.

Dane stared at him.

“There isn’t.”

Dad looked at me.

“Why would you never tell us something like this?”

I almost laughed.

“When exactly was I supposed to tell you?”

He blinked.

I continued.

“Was it when you skipped my commissioning ceremony because you had a golf tournament?”

His expression changed.

“Or when you introduced me at a charity dinner as your daughter who ‘plays with airplanes’?”

“Tessa—”

“Or maybe when I came home after months away and you spent dinner asking Caleb about his promotion without asking me a single question?”

My brother lowered his eyes.

For once, I was not angry at him.

Caleb had never asked to become Dad’s favorite. He had simply learned that life was easier when he played the role Dad created for him.

Dad’s face reddened.

“I didn’t know.”

I nodded.

“Exactly.”

Those two words silenced him.

“You didn’t know because you never wanted to know.”

The Arrival No One Expected

Before Dad could respond, movement outside the restaurant caught everyone’s attention.

Several dark government vehicles had stopped near the entrance.

A restaurant manager hurried toward the doors.

Moments later, three uniformed Air Force officers entered the private dining room.

The woman walking in front was Brigadier General Marianne Holt, one of the senior leaders connected to my command.

I immediately straightened.

She spotted me and smiled.

“Captain Marlowe.”

My father looked from her to me.

“Captain?”

General Holt approached.

“I apologize for interrupting the celebration.”

I shook my head.

“No apology necessary, ma’am.”

She held a small presentation case.

My heart began beating faster.

“We had been trying to reach you,” she said. “The final restrictions surrounding the Al-Safir operation were lifted this afternoon.”

Dane slowly sat down.

Dad looked completely lost.

General Holt continued.

“That means we are finally permitted to publicly recognize what you did.”

She opened the case.

Inside was a military decoration.

The room became completely still.

The Recognition That Came Seven Years Late

General Holt spoke clearly enough for everyone to hear.

She explained that my actions during the Al-Safir operation had been reviewed years earlier, but details surrounding the mission had prevented public recognition.

That restriction had finally changed.

“Captain Marlowe, your judgment and extraordinary performance in flight helped protect American personnel during circumstances in which very few pilots could have operated successfully.”

I swallowed hard.

Praise had always made me uncomfortable.

I knew what happened that night.

I also knew that many people had done their jobs.

I had simply been the person in the aircraft.

General Holt seemed to understand what I was thinking.

“I know you will tell me you were doing your duty.”

A few people smiled.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“You were. You also did considerably more than duty required.”

She presented me with the Distinguished Flying Cross.

For several seconds, I could not move.

Then I accepted it.

“Thank you, General.”

Behind me, I heard Dane quietly say:

“About time.”

A few guests laughed softly.

My father did not.

The Question That Changed the Room

General Holt glanced around.

“I assume these people are your family, Captain?”

It was an innocent question.

Yet the entire room seemed to understand what it meant.

My father looked at me.

For the first time that evening, there was no arrogance in his expression.

There was fear.
