Duchess Sophie Opens Up About Inheriting One of Queen Elizabeth’s Titles: ‘For Me It Was…’

Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie, have long stayed away from the limelight, yet the Duchess of Edinburgh recently opened up about the deep personal significance of her royal title, her evolving role, and the emotional weight that comes with being seen as the Royal Family’s “secret weapon.”

Carrying on a Royal Legacy

During a recent visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, Sophie shared candid thoughts on inheriting the title once held by Queen Elizabeth.

She told the Mirror, “It was quite a large shoe to fill… the Queen was Duchess of Edinburgh for the first few years when she and my father-in-law first married.” The late monarch held the title before becoming Queen.

Reflecting on the transition, Sophie admitted, “For me, it was quite an emotional thing to step into her shoes… it felt like quite a big moment.”

Balancing Duty and Privacy

Sophie and Edward have maintained a careful balance between their private lives and their royal obligations. Speaking about their position within the monarchy, Sophie explained, “My role and my husband’s role is to support the King, as it was to support the Queen… We are fortunate not to be front and center, which gives us the flexibility to explore our interests and also be available when the King asks.”

She highlighted that her recent trip also aligned with her personal interests, illustrating the intersection between duty and passion. “Yes, we are there to support, and that will continue,” she emphasized.

The ‘Secret Weapon’ of the Royal Family

Over the years, Sophie has quietly gained recognition for her steady presence and commitment, earning her the nickname “the Royal Family’s secret weapon.” She addressed this label with a touch of humor, saying, “I like to fly under the radar. It’s all very well being a secret weapon, but if no one knows, maybe it’s too secret.”

Acknowledging the changing dynamics within the royal family, she added, “There are fewer working members… so I suppose I’m becoming less secretive. I just wonder what they’re going to describe me as next!”

Stepping Up for the Monarchy

Though often out of the spotlight, Sophie and Edward’s consistent service has not gone unnoticed. As working royals, their presence has grown more prominent—especially as the monarchy adapts to a smaller core. According to The Sun, experts now suggest the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh could be stepping into a more visible role, potentially filling the gap left by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
