Part 2 of 3

Now Rebecca asked whether Cole could get into my house.

He could not. My mother could.

At eleven, my mother called. I let the call go to voicemail.

“Hope you landed safely, sweetheart. Maisie’s pickup is handled.”

I forwarded the recording to the officer and called the school again. The office told me that my mother had called and claimed she could not reach me, but staff had followed my written instructions and had not changed Maisie’s pickup arrangements. My mother still believed I was away.

I drove to her townhouse and parked on a public street where I could see the front entrance without drawing attention. Her car was outside. A few minutes later, Cole’s truck pulled in. I waited until they both left, then followed from a distance, keeping several cars between us. They went to a business office near a strip of small shops. Through the glass entrance, I could see the name of a lending company.

I photographed the address and sent it to Rebecca. While I waited for her to call back, I tried to keep my attention on the road and not on the image of Maisie’s passport in my mother’s bag.

When Rebecca called, she spoke quickly.

“A broker just contacted your company’s finance director to confirm a personal guarantee.”

Cole had applied for a loan of four hundred thousand dollars. The application included my financial records and a scanned version of my signature. The broker had been told that everything needed to be completed quickly because I was traveling, and my mother had presented herself as the person coordinating the paperwork.

I told Rebecca where Cole and my mother were. She contacted the broker, who put the application on hold immediately.

A few minutes later, Cole walked out of the building, speaking angrily into his phone. My mother came out behind him. I could not hear them through my closed car window, but I saw her reach for his arm when he gestured toward the street.

Then my own phone lit up with her name.

I did not answer.

A message appeared a few seconds later.

“You need to help your brother before this gets worse.”

Just then, Megan called from my house. Maisie had remembered another thing my mother said before she left the previous evening.

“She said if Dad wouldn’t sign the papers, we’d go somewhere he couldn’t find us.”

I looked across the parking lot at my mother, who still seemed to believe I would eventually do what she wanted if she kept pushing.

Then another message arrived.

“Once Maisie is with me, you’ll listen.”

I called the officer handling the report and read the message aloud. I sent him a screenshot, described the lending office, and told him where my mother and Cole were. He asked whether Maisie was safe. I told him she was inside my locked house with Megan.

“Stay in your car,” he said. “Don’t approach them.”

Every instinct in me wanted to cross the parking lot and demand the passport. I wanted to ask my mother what she had been thinking, and I wanted to make Cole explain why my signature was on a loan application I had never seen. But I also knew that Maisie needed me to come home more than she needed me to confront them in a parking lot.

I stayed where I was.

My mother put away her phone, still expecting me to respond as I had so many times before, by explaining myself until she found a way to turn my explanation into a promise. Two patrol officers arrived before she and Cole could leave. They spoke with them outside the lending office while I waited nearby, then one of the officers came over to hear my account.

I showed him the itinerary, the messages, and the photograph of the open drawer in my study. I explained how Maisie had brought me the key and what she had told me. My mother first claimed the trip was a surprise vacation I had already approved. When the officer asked her to show him that approval, she pointed to my message thanking her for handling school pickup.

Then he asked her about the text saying I would listen once Maisie was with her.

She had much less to say.

Maisie’s passport was inside my mother’s handbag. The officers documented that they had found it and returned it to me. They continued asking questions about the travel plans and the loan application, but there was no way to resolve every part of it beside the lending office, so they recorded what they could and continued their work.

My mother asked to talk to me before I left.

I said no.

She called my name as I crossed the pavement, her voice hurt and bewildered, the same voice that had once made me soften decisions or promise more than I could afford. This time, I got into my car and drove home.

The Questions Maisie Was Afraid to Ask

Megan was sitting on the floor with Maisie when I came in. They had been building a tiny wooden house, and Maisie looked first at my empty hands, then up at my face.

“Did you get my passport?”

“Yes,” I said, sitting down beside her.

She placed another block carefully on the little house.

“Am I going somewhere?”
