At My Sister-in-Law’s Luxury Wedding, My Hungry Five-Year-Old Son Was Knocked To The Floor After His Grandmother Snatched Away His Cupcake While My Husband Coldly Whispered, “We’ll Talk Later”—But Minutes Later, My Son’s Innocent Words Exposed My Missing House Fund, A Hidden Yellow Envelope, And The Secret That Forced The Groom To Postpone The Wedding

Part 2 of 3

Now my son was telling me about a hidden envelope.

A Question Asked in Front of Everyone

The ceremony had already taken place earlier that afternoon. What remained was a formal toast and the signing of several venue documents before dinner was served.

When Miles and I returned to the ballroom, Graham’s mother, Katherine, noticed the bandages on his knees.

“What happened to him?” she asked.

Judith answered before I could.

“He was running where he should not have been running.”

Kendra, who was passing with a tray of drinks, stopped.

“That is not what happened,” she said.

Several people nearby turned toward her.

Kendra placed the tray on a service table.

“I gave him a cupcake because he had not eaten. Mrs. Whitmore pulled it away from him, and he lost his balance.”

Judith’s cheeks flushed.

“This is a family matter.”

Katherine looked down at Miles.

“Were you hungry, sweetheart?”

Miles nodded.

She took a dinner roll from a basket and handed it to him.

“Then please eat this.”

Miles looked toward Judith before accepting it.

“Is it expensive?” he asked.

Katherine blinked.

“No, honey. Why would you ask that?”

Miles lowered his voice.

“Grandma said everything here cost too much because Mommy’s house money was almost gone.”

The nearby conversations stopped.

Judith became perfectly still.

Connor closed his eyes for a moment, as if he already understood what was coming.

Graham’s father, Thomas Mercer, looked toward me.

“Paige, what does he mean by your house money?”

I could have protected Judith again.

I could have laughed awkwardly and said that Miles had misunderstood.

Instead, I answered honestly.

“Connor and I transferred eighteen thousand dollars from our home savings to cover the remaining venue expenses.”

Thomas looked at Judith.

“You told us you paid the outstanding balance yourself.”

Judith forced a strained smile.

“It was family money. There is no need to make a distinction.”

“There is a very important distinction,” I said. “It was my personal savings account.”

I opened the banking application on my phone and showed the transfers.

One payment had gone toward the venue deposit. Another had covered flowers and photography. A third had been moved directly into Judith’s personal account.

Mallory stepped down from the stage.

“Mom told me Connor contributed a little,” she said. “I did not know it was Paige’s house fund.”

I looked at her.

“Did you ever ask?”

Mallory said nothing.

The Yellow Envelope

Miles tugged my sleeve.

“Mommy, should I tell them about the yellow thing?”

Judith turned sharply.

“That is enough, Miles.”

Katherine moved closer to him.

“He has a right to speak.”

Miles pointed toward Judith’s burgundy handbag on a nearby chair.

“Grandma put the yellow envelope in there.”

Thomas’s expression changed.

Three weeks earlier, he and Katherine had given Graham and Mallory a sealed envelope containing twelve thousand dollars. It was meant to help the couple begin saving for a home after the wedding.

Only Mallory and Judith had been present when the gift was handed over.

Thomas looked at Mallory.

“Is that the envelope we gave you?”

Mallory’s eyes filled with tears.

“Mom said she would keep it safe until after the reception.”

Graham stepped toward Judith.

“Please open the bag.”

Judith clutched the strap.

“You are humiliating me over the confused comments of a child.”

“Then opening the bag will settle the matter,” Graham replied.

For several seconds, she refused.

The room remained silent.

Finally, Connor spoke.

“Mom, open it.”

Judith looked at him in disbelief.

“You are siding against your own family?”

Connor glanced at Miles’s bandaged knees.

“My wife and son are my family too.”

Judith slowly opened the handbag.

Inside was a torn yellow envelope.

Graham removed it and counted the money privately with his father near the edge of the stage.

Only seven thousand dollars remained.

A handwritten note inside listed several expenses: a car payment, personal credit card bills, wedding accessories, and cash withdrawals.

Five thousand dollars had already been used.

Mallory stared at the paper.

“You told me it was untouched.”

Judith began speaking quickly.

“Your car was behind on payments. Your alterations cost more than expected. I was trying to prevent everything from falling apart.”

“You used money intended for our future without telling us,” Graham said.

“I did it for Mallory.”

“No,” Thomas replied. “You did it because you believed appearances mattered more than honesty.”

A Wedding Put on Hold

Graham turned toward Mallory.
