At two that morning, after copying the footage to several secure locations, I had called Rachel Keene, an assistant United States attorney who once worked beside me on a financial case. I also contacted Arthur Bellamy, the court-appointed trustee named in Andrew’s original estate documents.

The page before Victor authorized an emergency forensic audit, froze changes in company ownership, and activated a protective clause if anyone tried to move trust assets while my capacity was being questioned.

Victor saw my signature and believed he had won.

That afternoon, he and Miles attempted to transfer nearly five million dollars into an offshore holding company. The request was blocked, and a copy went directly to Rachel.

Meanwhile, I continued giving Victor what he expected. I left harmless vitamin tablets beside my bed and let him assume they were prescribed medication. I paused before answering simple questions, pretended to forget appointments, and allowed him to record my silence.

His confidence grew.

Two nights later, he sat across from me at dinner, cutting his steak with careful neatness.

“A specialist is coming Friday,” he said. “After that, you’ll spend a few weeks at a private wellness center. No phone calls. No business. No legal matters.”

“And the company?”

“You won’t need to worry about it anymore.”

I looked at the empty chair where Jamie used to sit.

“Like Jamie doesn’t have to worry anymore.”

Victor’s knife stopped.

“What did you say?”

“I said Jamie doesn’t have to worry.”

For a long moment, neither of us moved. Then Victor smiled and lifted his glass.

That night, the kitchen security camera recorded him crushing several tablets into my tea. He believed the system had been disconnected during renovations. It had not. I left the cup untouched, sealed it in an evidence bag, and sent Rachel a message from a hidden phone.

By morning, the quiet investigation had become a federal matter.

Jamie’s Final Warning

Dean came to the house the following afternoon. I placed the roadster inside my handbag, turned on its microphone, and walked downstairs.

Victor met him near the greenhouse.

“The driver is asking questions,” Dean said. “She remembers I checked the SUV before the trip.”

“Then pay her,” Victor replied. “Or scare her enough that she stops talking.”

Dean lowered his voice.

“There’s something else. The kid recorded everything with that toy car.”

Victor’s expression changed.

“Find it.”

I stood behind the French doors, one hand wrapped around my bag. Jamie had noticed more than any of us realized. In his child’s mind, carrying the roadster from room to room had been a way of helping me. He had not understood the danger. He had only known his mother needed the truth.

That evening, Arthur arrived with a locked document case. He spread Andrew’s original trust papers across the dining room table and pointed to a provision Miles had concealed.

If a beneficiary’s loss was connected to fraud, coercion, or criminal conduct by a guardian or spouse, the shares could not pass under the ordinary succession clause and could never be administered by the person connected to that conduct. Instead, they would enter a protected charitable trust controlled jointly by me and a court-supervised fiduciary.

Victor had built his entire plan on a false version of the trust.

“He never read the original?” I asked.

Arthur shook his head.

“Miles gave him an altered copy. They counted on your grief keeping you from asking questions.”

For the first time since the church, I felt something other than sorrow.

Not hope. I was not ready for hope.

But purpose had entered the room.

The Announcement

Victor planned his public takeover for the following Monday at company headquarters. He invited investors, board members, and reporters, announcing that I would step away for health reasons while he guided the business through a “delicate transition.”

He expected me to remain home.

Instead, I arrived ten minutes after he began speaking, wearing the ivory suit Andrew had bought for my first board presentation. In one hand, I carried Jamie’s red roadster. In the other, I carried Miles’s blue folder.

The room fell quiet.

Victor’s face lost its color.

“Mara, you should be resting.”

“This company belonged to my son,” I said. “I’m exactly where I need to be.”

Miles stood.

“She is not in a condition to address the board.”

I looked toward the technician.
