It contained copies of recordings from the security system I had installed at Mom’s house years earlier.

In one video, Preston stood in the living room holding a stack of documents.

Mom was seated across from him.

“Just sign the papers, Aunt Dorothy. Nathan isn’t coming back anytime soon. There’s no reason to keep holding on to this property.”

Mom shook her head.

“This house belonged to my husband. Someday it belongs to my son. I’m not signing it away.”

Preston stepped toward her.

Then the recording skipped forward nineteen minutes.

When the picture returned, Mom was sitting on the floor, visibly shaken.

Camille appeared, gathering papers from the coffee table.

I stared at the screen.

“What happened during those nineteen minutes?”

Mom looked down.

“Preston kept pressuring me. Camille said if I complained, you’d believe I was becoming forgetful and couldn’t make decisions anymore.”

Brooke explained that someone had deliberately removed part of the recording.

Then she opened another folder.

Inside were messages exchanged between Preston and Camille more than two years earlier.

One read:

“Nathan already believes Brooke wants the house.”

Preston had replied:

“Good. As long as Brooke stays close to Dorothy, we won’t get anything done.”

My hands began trembling.

Two years earlier, Preston had warned me that Brooke was asking too many questions about my mother’s property.

Camille, who was then a family acquaintance, had shown me screenshots supposedly proving that Brooke wanted Mom out of the house.

I had believed them.

I had believed everyone except my own wife.

The Secret Behind the $6.8 Million House

Brooke spread another set of documents across the table.

“Preston wasn’t only interested in the house.”

The papers described a separate piece of commercial land outside Asheville.

My father had once owned it jointly with Preston’s father. Years before his death, they had legally divided the property.

I had always believed my father’s portion had been sold to cover medical expenses.

But the records showed otherwise.

The land still belonged to my father’s estate, and recent development had made it extremely valuable.

Preston knew about it.

He had been communicating with property consultants and looking for ways to gain control over both assets.

To do that, he needed broad legal authority over Mom’s affairs.

Brooke had discovered irregularities in the paperwork while we were still married.

Suddenly, I remembered one of our worst arguments.

“Your cousin keeps asking your mother to sign papers without explaining them,” she had told me.

“Preston handles the family paperwork. He’s helping her.”

“Nathan, he’s asking her to sign pages with blank spaces. That isn’t normal.”

Instead of listening, I accused her of being obsessed with my family’s money.

I could still hear my own words.

“My mother needs protection from people like you, Brooke. Not from Preston.”

She had cried that night.

Three months later, we divorced.

I had convinced myself I was escaping a dishonest marriage.

Now I understood that I had pushed away the person trying to protect us.

The Confrontation I Should Have Had Years Earlier

The next morning, I returned to Mom’s house with Brooke, an attorney named Russell Mercer, and a trusted family friend.

Mom stayed with a neighbor because she was still recovering.

Camille opened the front door.

The moment she saw Brooke beside me, her face went pale.

“So she’s convinced you of her ridiculous stories?”

I didn’t argue.

“Where are my mother’s property records?”

“Ask your mother.”

“My mother has been living in a rented apartment for three months because she’s afraid to come home.”

Camille said nothing.

In Mom’s bedroom, we found drawers filled with unfamiliar paperwork.

Several pages contained attempts to reproduce her signature.

There were also copies of identification documents, property applications, and banking information.

Our attorney photographed everything and explained that the documents would need formal examination.

Camille began crying.

“I didn’t make those papers. Preston did.”

“Then why did you let him keep pressuring Mom?”

“He said everything was legal. He said she was getting confused.”

“Who was sending messages from her phone?”

Camille stared at the floor.

“I was.”

“For how long?”

“Several months.”

I felt as though the room had tilted.

“And why did you do that?”

“Preston said if you came home before the sale was arranged, everything would fall apart.”

There it was.

The sale.

They had been planning to control property that wasn’t theirs.

Then I asked the question that had been troubling me most.

“Why did you help turn me against Brooke?”

Camille wiped her face.

“Preston said she was getting in the way.”

“Those screenshots you showed me before my divorce. Were they real?”

She hesitated.

“Not all of them.”

I leaned against the wall.

“You knew they weren’t real?”

“Preston put them together. I just showed them to you.”

Eight years of marriage had ended because I trusted manipulated messages instead of the woman who had stood beside me through everything.

When Preston Walked Through the Door

Preston arrived that afternoon.

He entered the living room looking irritated.

“What’s going on here, Nathan? Why is everybody acting like I’ve done something wrong?”

I placed the power-of-attorney document on the table.

“Explain this.”

He glanced at it.

“Your mother asked me to help.”

“She says she never signed it.”

Preston shrugged.

“Aunt Dorothy is getting older. She doesn’t always remember things correctly.”

I thought of Mom holding on to Brooke’s shoulders, terrified of returning home.
