After Being Forced Away From My Billionaire Husband for a Year, I Returned to Our Divorce Signing Holding Our Little Girl—The Moment He Realized She Was His Daughter, the Scheme His Father Had Hidden for an Entire Year Finally Began to Unravel

Part 2 of 3

His hands began to shake.

Elodie’s Last Chance

Elodie stirred against me and released a weak cough.

Reid immediately looked up.

For the first time, his daughter opened her eyes.

They were the same unusual gray as his.

He moved closer, almost without realizing it.

“She has my eyes.”

“She has more than your eyes.”

I opened the medical folder beneath the documents.

“Elodie inherited a rare genetic condition connected to the Halbrook family line. Her doctors believe the same condition affected your uncle when he was young.”

Reid’s expression tightened.

“What does she need?”

“A compatible bone marrow donor.”

My voice remained steady, although every word felt heavy.

“I am not the right match. The specialists believe you may be her strongest chance.”

He looked at Elodie again.

“How much time does she have?”

“Not much.”

The executives around the table lowered their eyes.

The meeting was no longer about money or control.

It was about a child trying to keep breathing.

Tobias stepped forward again.

“Reid, you should not make decisions based on an unverified claim. We can arrange independent testing after the contracts are completed.”

Reid turned toward him with a look I had never seen before.

“My daughter does not have time for your contracts.”

The Man Behind the Lie

Before Tobias could answer, the conference room doors opened.

Everett Halbrook entered with a silver-handled walking cane and the quiet confidence of a man accustomed to controlling every room.

He was Reid’s father.

He had founded the Halbrook Meridian Group and handed leadership to Reid several years earlier, although he had never truly accepted losing power.

Everett looked at the papers in Reid’s hand.

Then he looked at me.

There was no surprise in his face.

Reid noticed it too.

“You knew,” he said.

Everett remained calm.

“I knew there was a possibility.”

“A possibility?” Reid repeated. “You gave me medical documents saying my child was gone.”

Everett walked toward the table.

“You were preparing for the largest merger in company history. Your focus was unstable. Your marriage had become a distraction.”

“She was my wife.”

“She was not prepared for our world.”

I held Elodie more tightly.

“So you removed me from it.”

Everett finally looked directly at me.

“I protected what my family spent generations building.”

Reid’s breathing changed.

“You let me mourn a living child.”

“I allowed you to remain functional.”

“You left Maren alone while she was pregnant.”

“She survived.”

Reid stared at his father as though he were seeing him for the first time.

Everett pointed toward the documents on the table.

“None of this changes what must happen today. You have already signed the majority transfer agreement. Once it is certified, controlling authority returns to my trust.”

I looked at Reid.

“What transfer agreement?”

Tobias said nothing.

Everett answered instead.

“My son has demonstrated that personal matters influence his judgment. The board agreed that the company required more experienced leadership.”

The truth became clear.

Our separation had never been only about class, reputation, or family pride.

Everett had used our marriage to weaken Reid. He had created the false medical report, isolated me, and allowed his son to believe he had lost both his wife and child. Then, when Reid became exhausted and emotionally unstable, Everett used that condition to convince the board that he should regain control.

The Clause Everett Forgot

Tobias reached for the signed transfer agreement.

Reid caught his wrist before he could pick it up.

“Do not touch that document.”

Tobias froze.

Reid released him and lifted the agreement from the table.

He examined the final page.

Then his eyes narrowed.

“It has not been notarized.”

Tobias swallowed.

“The notary was about to enter when Mrs. Halbrook interrupted the meeting.”

A strange calm settled over Reid.

“My grandfather included a succession clause in the original company charter.”

Everett’s confidence faltered.

“That clause is irrelevant.”

“No, it is not.”

Reid looked around the room.

“The charter states that a transfer of majority voting shares cannot become valid if the sitting chief executive produces a living biological heir before final certification.”

One of the board members leaned forward.

“He is correct. The clause was created to protect direct succession.”

Everett struck his cane against the floor.

“The child has not been legally verified.”

“Then we will verify her immediately,” Reid said. “But until that happens, this agreement cannot be certified.”

He placed the transfer papers on the table.

Then he reached for the divorce decree.

His signature waited at the bottom of the final page.
