A Wealthy Real Estate Developer Was Rushing to the Biggest Meeting of His Career When a Six-Year-Old Boy Knocked on His SUV Window and Begged, “Please Help My Mom” — Minutes Later, He Recognized the Woman He Had Left Seven Years Ago, Saw His Own Eyes in Her Twins… Then He Read the Paper Clutched in Her Hand and Canceled Everything

Part 2 of 3

Cameron froze.

“What paper?”

“The one Mom kept reading yesterday.”

Cameron glanced toward the folded notice on the chair beside him.

He could have lied.

Instead, he nodded.

“My company owns the building now.”

Owen’s face changed.

“Then you’re the reason we had to leave.”

There was no anger in his voice.

That somehow made the words harder to hear.

Cameron leaned forward.

“I didn’t know your family lived there.”

Owen looked directly at him.

“But you knew families lived there.”

Cameron had spent years negotiating with experienced lawyers and aggressive investors.

No one had ever silenced him with one sentence.

Until a six-year-old boy did.

Audrey Finally Opened Her Eyes

Several hours later, a doctor approached Cameron.

Audrey was awake and doing much better after receiving fluids, food, and rest. She had been overwhelmed by exhaustion and prolonged stress, but the medical team expected her to recover.

Cameron asked if he could see her.

When he entered the room, Audrey was looking toward the window.

Her face remained pale, but her eyes were clear.

She turned.

Their gazes met.

Audrey did not look surprised.

Instead, she gave a tired little smile.

“Of all the people in California.”

Cameron pulled a chair closer.

“Audrey, I have so many questions.”

“I imagine you do.”

“The children…”

She looked away.

Cameron lowered his voice.

“Are Owen and Sadie mine?”

A long silence followed.

Audrey finally looked at him again.

“Yes.”

One word changed the shape of Cameron’s entire life.

He leaned back in the chair.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Audrey’s expression hardened immediately.

“I did.”

Cameron stared at her.

“What?”

“I called you.”

She counted quietly on her fingers.

“I called your old number. I emailed you. I sent two letters to your first office. When the twins were three months old, I drove to Los Angeles because I thought if I stood in front of you, you would finally listen.”

Cameron could barely breathe.

“I never saw you.”

“I know.”

Audrey looked toward the window again.

“Your receptionist told me you were unavailable. Your assistant came downstairs and said you were preparing for an important presentation and couldn’t be interrupted.”

Cameron remembered that period.

His company had just received its first major investment.

He had told his staff to keep personal distractions away.

At the time, those words had sounded efficient.

Now they sounded cruel.

The Seven Years He Had Missed

Cameron sat silently while Audrey told him everything.

She had discovered she was expecting the twins shortly after he left.

At first she assumed Cameron would come back.

Then weeks became months.

Eventually, she understood that she would have to build a life without him.

She worked administrative jobs, raised Owen and Sadie, and moved into an affordable apartment in a neighborhood east of downtown.

Life was rarely easy, but she managed.

Then Whitlock Urban Properties purchased the building.

Cameron remembered the project.

His team had described the property as outdated and financially inefficient. The plan was to renovate the entire block into upscale apartments and retail spaces.

He had approved it after a twelve-minute presentation.

Audrey had been given several weeks to relocate.

She had searched everywhere.

Every apartment she found required a larger deposit or higher income than she could immediately provide.

“Yesterday I packed what I could,” Audrey said. “Today I was trying to get the children to a friend’s house across town. I hadn’t eaten much, and I guess I pushed myself too far.”

Cameron covered his face with his hands.

“Audrey, I’m sorry.”

She remained quiet.

“I can fix the apartment situation.”

Audrey looked at him sharply.

“This isn’t just about an apartment.”

He nodded slowly.

She continued.

“You missed their first steps. Their first words. Their first day of kindergarten. Owen learned to ride a bike last spring. Sadie stayed awake almost all night before her school play because she was nervous.”

Her eyes filled with emotion.

“There are things money cannot buy back, Cameron.”

He knew she was right.

Owen Was Standing at the Door

Neither of them noticed the hospital door had opened.

Owen stood in the hallway.

His face told Cameron that he had heard enough.

Cameron rose.

“Owen.”

The boy looked toward his mother first.

Then back at Cameron.

“You’re our dad?”

Cameron’s throat tightened.

“Yes.”

Owen remained completely still.

Cameron took one small step forward.

“I didn’t know.”

Owen’s eyes narrowed.

“Mom said she tried to tell you.”

Cameron stopped.

There was no explanation that could make those seven years disappear.

“She did.”

Owen looked confused.

“Then why weren’t you there?”

Cameron searched for an answer.

He finally gave the only truthful one.

“Because I was too busy thinking about myself.”

Audrey watched from the hospital bed.

Cameron crouched so he and Owen were at the same height.

“I made choices I wish I could change. I can’t ask you to trust me because you hardly know me.”

Owen said nothing.

“But if you let me, I want to start showing up.”

The boy crossed his arms.
