Part 2 of 3

“Campus safety has already begun an internal review.”

“An internal review?”

“We want to understand the full situation before incorrect information begins circulating.”

I studied him closely.

He had not asked how Sadie was feeling.

He had not asked whether she needed anything.

His first concern was information.

More specifically, he was concerned about information leaving the hospital.

“My daughter is facing surgery,” I said. “This is not a public-relations problem.”

“Of course not,” he replied quickly. “We simply want to protect her privacy and the university community.”

“Show me the security footage.”

He blinked.

“I don’t have authority to release it.”

“Then call someone who does.”

“Mr. Baird, these things require procedure.”

I stepped closer, keeping my voice controlled.

“Someone found my child unable to call for help, and you are standing here talking about procedure. You should choose your next words very carefully.”

Before he could answer, a nurse entered carrying a clear plastic bag.

Inside it was Sadie’s phone.

The screen was cracked, but it was still working.

“This was found beneath a stairwell near where she was discovered,” the nurse explained. “The investigators will need it, but it has been receiving repeated calls.”

The screen lit up.

There were more than thirty missed calls from a blocked number.

Then a new message appeared.

“Tell your father to stop asking questions. Next time, no one will find you in time.”

The dean read it over my shoulder.

All the color disappeared from his face.

I held up the phone.

“Does this still look like an internal university matter?”

The Name Sadie Wrote Down

Two detectives arrived shortly before sunrise.

Detective Maria Benton was calm and observant. Her partner, Detective Joel Ramsey, carried a notebook and asked most of the questions.

Sadie could not speak clearly, so the nurse gave her a small writing pad.

Her hand trembled as she tried to form letters.

The first attempt was unreadable.

She closed her eyes, took a slow breath, and tried again.

This time, she wrote one word.

“Travis.”

Detective Ramsey leaned closer.

“Travis who?”

Sadie stared toward the dean.

Dean Dorsey immediately looked at the floor.

I noticed.

So did Detective Benton.

“You recognize the name,” I said.

The dean swallowed.

“There is a student named Travis Locklin.”

“Who is he?”

The dean hesitated for far too long.

“He is a senior. His family has been connected to Westbridge for many years.”

Detective Benton crossed her arms.

“Connected how?”

“His father, Howard Locklin, is chairman of the university’s governing board.”

The room became silent.

Sadie began crying.

I sat beside her and held her hand while the detectives asked whether she had known Travis personally.

She nodded.

Had he contacted her recently?

Another nod.

Had she been afraid of him?

Sadie looked at me, then slowly nodded again.

Before the detectives could continue, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered and placed the call on speaker.

A man’s voice spoke with the calm confidence of someone who had rarely heard the word no.

“Mr. Baird, I believe your daughter is confused.”

I looked at Dean Dorsey.

His eyes widened.

“Who is this?”

“Howard Locklin. My son’s name is being carelessly mentioned in connection with an unfortunate event.”

“My daughter wrote his name.”

“She has been through a difficult night. People sometimes make mistakes when they are frightened.”

I looked at Sadie, then at the detectives.

“The mistake was believing she had no one willing to protect her.”

The line went silent.

Then Howard Locklin ended the call.

The Evidence Everyone Had Overlooked

Sadie underwent surgery the next morning.

While she rested, I began reviewing everything I could find online.

I searched public photographs, campus event pages, student posts and videos uploaded on the night she was found.

Most showed nothing important.

At three in the morning, I discovered a short video posted by a first-year student.

The student had been filming the rain outside her dormitory window. In the distance, near the science building, two figures could be seen beneath an overhang.

One was tall and wore a dark jacket.

The other was smaller and wore a green sweatshirt identical to Sadie’s.

The video had been recorded five minutes before campus security found her.

It did not show exactly what had happened, but it proved Sadie had not been alone.

More importantly, Travis Locklin had reacted to the post before it was deleted.

Someone had taken a screenshot.

The following afternoon, Detective Benton visited me in the hospital cafeteria.

“The video is useful,” she said. “But it may not be enough by itself.”

“What about the cameras?”

Her jaw tightened.

“The university says the camera covering that entrance was unavailable that night.”

“Unavailable?”

“That’s what they’re claiming.”

“Do you believe them?”

She looked around before lowering her voice.

“I believe too many convenient things happened at the same time.”

That was all I needed to hear.

The Box Beneath My Bed

After four days, Sadie was allowed to recover at my house.

I prepared the downstairs bedroom, filled the refrigerator with soft food, and placed a chair beside her bed so I could hear her if she needed me during the night.

She rarely complained.

That worried me more than anything.

The bright, talkative young woman who used to debate every decision now spent hours staring at the television without seeing it.

One morning, while she slept, I opened the closet in my bedroom.

Beneath several old blankets was a metal box I had not touched since leaving the Army.
