“Why Did You Abandon Me Without A Goodbye?” I Demanded When My Former Lover Finally Regained Consciousness After Emergency Surgery. He’d Vanished Six Years Ago, Leaving Me To Raise Our Daughter Alone. “I Thought Leaving Would Protect You,” He Whispered. Then His FBI Superior Entered And Revealed That Someone Had Been Watching My Apartment—and My Little Girl.

Part 2 of 3

Before he could deliver everything he had uncovered, he was killed in an explosion disguised as an accident.

At the time of his death, Ethan had a six-month-old daughter.

Her mother had already disappeared, leaving Julian responsible for the infant as her legal guardian.

“Julian inherited Ethan’s evidence and responsibility for the child,” Victoria explained. “The people who killed my son quickly realized he was continuing the investigation.”

I looked toward Julian.

“And that somehow justified disappearing without telling me whether you were alive?”

Victoria did not attempt to excuse him.

“He believed anyone emotionally connected to him could become a target. He decided distance would protect you, although I never agreed that he had the right to make that decision alone.”

She described the years Julian had spent operating under changing identities, quietly tracing financial transactions and searching for the person responsible for Ethan’s death.

Then she removed a sealed envelope bearing my name.

“He wrote this six years ago and instructed me to deliver it if his cover was compromised beyond recovery.”

I recognized his handwriting immediately.

“Why didn’t you tell me any of this when I spent months trying to find him?”

Victoria hesitated.

“Because Julian believed maintaining the separation was essential, and I allowed his judgment to influence mine.”

I took the envelope without opening it.

Julian watched me with exhausted eyes.

“Emily, I never stopped loving you, even when I convinced myself I had to stay away.”

I wanted those words to comfort me, but they only reminded me of everything Lily and I had endured.

“Love doesn’t erase the consequences of leaving, Julian. If you want to protect us now, start by telling the truth.”

I walked out carrying the letter and the frightening knowledge that my daughter might already be connected to a criminal investigation.

Chapter 4: The Letter Beneath the Kitchen Light

When I finally returned home, Rebecca was waiting in the kitchen with a cup of tea.

Lily slept in her bedroom, holding the stuffed rabbit she carried everywhere.

I explained enough about the situation for Rebecca to understand why we needed to be especially careful, then placed Julian’s envelope on the table.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My dearest Emily,

If you’re reading this, my cover has been compromised, and Victoria believes I can no longer protect you by staying away.

After Ethan’s death, someone sent me a photograph of you leaving the hospital. Written on the back was a warning that the next person I loved would suffer because of the evidence I was hiding.

I was terrified, and I made the cruelest decision of my life without giving you any choice.

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

The letter continued.

Julian described an encrypted file among Ethan’s investigative materials marked with my initials, E.H.

It contained references to a maternity clinic in Tacoma where my medical information had been accessed without authorization.

He had discovered that someone connected to the criminal network was monitoring my records.

Then I reached a passage that made my chest tighten.

Months after I left, I drove past the hospital where you had given birth. I saw you through a window holding a baby wrapped in pink. I couldn’t know for certain whether she was mine, and I was afraid approaching you would expose both of you to the people watching me.

I turned away, and there hasn’t been a day when I haven’t regretted it.

Tears blurred the paper.

Julian had seen me holding our daughter.

He had known that I might have given birth to his child, yet he had still chosen to remain hidden.

At the bottom of the final page, a short postscript appeared.

Ask your father about your mother’s blue box.

I stared at the words.

My mother had died years earlier, but my father lived in Olympia and still kept many of her belongings.

I opened the plastic container holding our old family documents.

Among my vaccination records and childhood photographs was a folder containing information about my birth.

The discharge certificate listed North Sound Women’s Clinic as my birthplace.

That was strange because my mother had always told me I was born at St. Catherine’s Hospital.

One photograph showed my parents holding me as an infant in a room with pale-blue walls.

A small brass plaque on the door displayed the number 214.

I called my father immediately.

Although it was nearly one in the morning, he answered after several rings.

“Dad, I need you to tell me everything you know about North Sound Women’s Clinic and Mom’s blue metal box.”

His silence lasted long enough to frighten me.

“Emily, where did you hear about that box?”

“Julian Mercer wrote about it, and I need to know why my birth certificate names a clinic you never mentioned.”

My father began crying.

Then he told me the story my mother had carried to her grave.

Chapter 5: The Secret Hidden in Room 214

My mother had once worked as a nurse at North Sound Women’s Clinic, where she discovered suspicious alterations to maternity records and evidence that newborn identification information was being sold.

According to my father, the clinic’s director had connections to a criminal organization that manipulated birth records to facilitate illegal transactions.

My mother secretly collected evidence while continuing her nursing duties.

She stored copies inside a blue metal box marked with the number 214.

Then she discovered that someone had altered records connected to my birth.

“Your mother was frightened that the people involved might use your identity to threaten her,” my father explained. “She changed your surname in certain records and moved us away.”

He revealed that one early document identified me as Emily Mercer rather than Emily Hayes.

The discovery made my head spin.

“Are you telling me that Mom wasn’t my biological mother?”

“No, sweetheart. Your mother gave birth to you, and I was there when you arrived. She changed information to protect you, not because you belonged to another family.”

But there was another complication.

My father explained that my mother suspected certain files had been deliberately confused with records connected to Ethan Mercer’s daughter.

A former nurse named Marisol Vega had disappeared with that child, apparently hoping to protect her from the same organization.

“Where is Ethan’s daughter now?” I demanded.

“I don’t know, Emily. Your mother tried to find out, but she never discovered what happened afterward.”

He also remembered a photograph showing Julian holding a baby wrapped in a pink blanket embroidered with a small crescent moon.

The image had troubled my mother because she believed it was connected to the altered clinic records.

While we spoke, two messages arrived from an unfamiliar number.

Ask Agent Mercer why he failed to recognize his own daughter.

The second message was even more disturbing.

And ask him where Ethan Mercer’s missing child really went.

For several moments, I stared at my telephone without breathing.

Whoever sent those messages knew about Julian, the missing girl, and the investigation.

They also knew how to reach me.

I ended the call with my father and immediately contacted Victoria.

By the time we finished discussing security arrangements, I understood that remaining in my apartment without additional protection would be irresponsible.

Rebecca agreed to help move Lily temporarily to her older sister Nora’s home while federal agents checked our surroundings.

I kissed my sleeping daughter before leaving.

Her small hand rested beneath her cheek, and I noticed the faint crescent-shaped birthmark just below her left ear.

I had seen that mark thousands of times.

Until that night, I had never considered it might connect to a secret larger than our family.

Chapter 6: The Missing Child and the Blue Box

I returned to the hospital shortly after four in the morning.

Julian was awake when I entered, although the effort of turning toward me clearly caused discomfort.

I showed him the anonymous messages.

“Tell me where Ethan’s daughter is, Julian, and please don’t protect me with another incomplete explanation.”

His expression changed immediately.

He explained that six months after Ethan’s death, a woman named Marisol Vega had appeared with documentation identifying her as the child’s biological mother.

The records had been verified through official channels.

The girl was transferred into protective arrangements, and Marisol took her to California.

Afterward, both disappeared from the Bureau’s tracking systems.

“I believed the paperwork was genuine, Emily. I had no reason to suspect someone had manipulated the records at that point.”

I described the photograph my father remembered.

Julian looked increasingly pale.
