My Brother’s Bride-To-Be Asked Our Seventy-Three-Year-Old Grandmother To Spend Three Days Making Her A Four-Tier Wedding Cake, Then Refused To Pay Her Anything. So Instead Of Arguing, I Prepared A Wedding Present That Would Make Sure She Never Forgot The Promise She Broke.

Part 2 of 3

“Everyone will think it’s gorgeous, Grandma, because it really is the most beautiful cake you’ve ever made.”

She picked up her handbag.

Neither of us mentioned Vanessa again during the drive.

I wanted Grandma to have a pleasant afternoon.

I also wanted my brother to understand what kind of woman he’d married.

For the moment, those goals seemed almost impossible to reconcile.

Part 4: A Beautiful Ceremony and an Ugly Secret

The wedding venue was a restored wooden barn surrounded by rolling Virginia countryside.

Thousands of tiny lights decorated the ceiling beams, and elegant floral arrangements stood beside long tables covered with ivory linens.

The ceremony itself was beautiful.

Ethan cried while reading his vows, and Vanessa smiled beneath her lace veil as the guests applauded.

Watching my brother, I realized how little he understood about what had happened that morning.

He had always adored Grandma.

He couldn’t possibly know that his bride had laughed at her request for money needed to purchase heart medication.

After the ceremony, everyone moved into the reception hall.

Grandma’s four-tier cake stood on a decorated rolling display table beneath a magnificent arrangement of overhead lights.

Its ivory frosting and pink sugar roses matched the wedding flowers perfectly.

Vanessa instructed the photographer to capture the cake from several different angles.

Every time another guest complimented it, she smiled proudly.

She never mentioned who had made it.

Grandma sat quietly near the dessert table, watching the celebration.

I joined her.

“You really outdid yourself, Grandma, and Ethan looks happier than I’ve seen him in a very long time.”

She smiled.

“That’s all I wanted, Natalie, because seeing him happy has always meant more to me than anything else.”

I wished the evening could have ended there.

But I kept thinking about her medication and the way Vanessa had treated her.

At approximately seven thirty, shortly before the scheduled cake-cutting ceremony, I approached the newlyweds’ table carrying my wrapped gift.

“I have something special for both of you, and I thought you might like to open it before the photographs begin.”

Vanessa brightened immediately.

“Natalie, you shouldn’t have brought something so fancy, but I absolutely love opening wedding presents.”

She removed the ribbon and lifted the lid.

The silver picture frame made her smile.

Then she noticed the invoice underneath.

Her expression changed.

She quickly folded the paper, trying to hide it behind her bouquet.

Unfortunately for her, Ethan noticed.

“What’s that document, Vanessa? You looked upset as soon as you saw it.”

“It’s nothing important, Ethan, and we really don’t need to discuss it right now.”

I spoke before she could conceal it completely.

“It’s the receipt for Grandma’s wedding cake, and I paid it because Vanessa refused to reimburse her this morning.”

Vanessa’s head snapped toward me.

“Why would you put something like that inside our wedding present?”

I met her glare.

“I wanted to give you a chance to acknowledge what happened instead of pretending Grandma volunteered to pay for everything.”

Her face reddened.

She began demanding that I stop embarrassing her.

I turned away and walked toward the cake.

Within moments, her furious footsteps were following me across the dance floor.

Part 5: The Cake That Suddenly Belonged to Me

I approached the rolling display table and carefully released its wheel brakes.

The cake was enormous, and I had no intention of damaging Grandma’s work.

Slowly, I guided the display across the polished wooden floor toward my family’s table.

Guests stopped talking as we passed.

Vanessa hurried behind me.

“Natalie, stop moving my wedding cake right now, because you’re making a complete spectacle of yourself!”

I continued carefully until the display stood beside my chair.

Then I engaged the brakes and sat down.

Vanessa looked ready to explode.

“What gives you the right to take my cake away from the center of my own reception?”

I folded my hands.

“Grandma was promised payment for this cake, and when you refused to pay, I covered the entire amount myself.”

I glanced toward the elaborate decorations.

“Since I paid for it, perhaps I should be the one who gets to enjoy it.”

Vanessa stared at me.

“You can’t possibly be serious, because that cake was designed specifically for my wedding!”

I reached for a clean dessert spoon.

“Grandma’s cakes are always delicious, and I would hate for something she worked so hard on to go unappreciated.”

I raised the spoon toward the second tier.

Vanessa shouted.

“Don’t you dare touch that cake, Natalie, or I swear you’ll regret what happens next!”

I stopped with the spoon hovering just above the frosting.

Several nearby conversations fell silent.

Vanessa began accusing me of jealousy.

“You’ve never liked me, and now you’re trying to destroy my wedding because you can’t stand seeing me happy!”

By then, Ethan had followed us across the reception hall.

He looked deeply confused.

“Would someone please explain what’s happening before this argument gets any worse?”

I lowered the spoon slightly.

“Vanessa promised Grandma she’d pay for the ingredients and her labor, but she refused when she collected the cake this morning.”

Ethan turned toward his wife.

“You told me Grandma had offered to make the cake as a wedding present. Was that actually true?”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She asked for money at first, but honestly, who charges their own family for a wedding cake?”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“You knew she expected payment, and you told me she’d volunteered to do everything for free?”

Vanessa waved her hand.

“It’s an ordinary cake, Ethan, and I cannot believe we’re having this discussion in front of our guests.”

I explained that Grandma had needed the promised payment to refill her heart medication.

Ethan looked toward her table.

She was sitting very still, with her hands folded tightly in her lap.

“You knew Grandma needed that money for her medicine?” he asked.

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

“Please don’t turn this into some emotional lecture, because she could easily wait a few more days for her prescription.”

Ethan stared at her.

Then Vanessa said something that made the entire reception hall fall silent.

“For heaven’s sake, Ethan, it’s not like she’s going to drop dead because she waits a little longer!”

I watched my brother’s face.

The man who had cried with happiness during his wedding vows seemed to disappear.

In his place stood someone who had just discovered a truth he desperately wished he could deny.

Part 6: My Brother Took the Spoon

Ethan looked toward Grandma again.

A tear had slipped down her cheek, although she was doing everything possible to appear composed.

He turned back to Vanessa.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

His silence seemed to irritate her even more.

“Ethan, tell your sister to apologize immediately and put the cake back where it belongs.”

His voice became unusually quiet.

“That’s enough, Vanessa, because I don’t want to hear another word about how inconvenient my grandmother’s medication is for you.”

Then he walked toward me.

I felt my stomach tighten.

Perhaps I’d pushed the confrontation too far.

Perhaps Ethan would blame me for humiliating his bride before their guests.

He stopped beside my chair and extended his hand.
