My father had taught me to sign the first letter of Catherine unusually narrow after I complained as a teenager that my full name took too long to write.

The forged signature used a broad opening stroke.

I had seen that stroke before.

Sienna wrote my name that way on handwritten event cards.

By Wednesday, investigators identified eight expense reports tied to investor meetings that either never happened or had been materially misrepresented.

Several clients confirmed they were not present.

One institutional investor was furious to learn that his name appeared beside nearly sixty thousand dollars in entertainment expenses.

Then an old investor named George Ellis called me personally.

“Catherine, I have not been aboard one of Bennett Aldridge’s aircraft in three years.”

“Your name appears on three manifests.”

“I was in Boston on every one of those dates.”

After a pause, he lowered his voice.

“Nathan has also been telling people Prescott Meridian intends to reduce its voting position.”

My stomach tightened.

“That is completely false.”

George hesitated.

“He claims he is preparing a modernization of the capital structure.”

That sentence changed the investigation.

Dana obtained the board materials scheduled for Friday.

Page seventy-two contained the real attack.

Nathan proposed creating a new executive voting class supposedly tied to management performance. If approved, the structure would reduce Prescott Meridian’s effective voting control from fifty-two percent to approximately thirty-one percent.

A note beneath the proposal stated:

Prescott representative preliminarily supportive.

I stared at it.

“Who is the Prescott representative?”

Dana’s expression remained cold.

“According to their memorandum, you are.”

They had not merely borrowed my name for private flights.

They were preparing to borrow my consent to take control of the company.

Part 4 — The Seat They Took From Me

Friday was the company’s anniversary gala at a luxury hotel in Manhattan.

Nathan had already informed me that Sienna would sit beside him at the executive table because the seating plan needed to reflect the company’s “new leadership structure.”

My assigned place was across the ballroom with spouses, retired donors, and charitable trustees.

After twelve years of sitting beside my husband at every major company event, his mistress had taken my chair.

“And you agreed to this?” I asked him that morning.

Nathan sighed.

“Catherine, this is business.”

Something inside me became remarkably calm.

“Then I will sit wherever you want.”

His shoulders relaxed.

“Thank you for not making everything difficult.”

I arrived alone wearing a black silk gown and my father’s watch.

Sienna stood beside Nathan in emerald satin, the $28,600 diamond bracelet glittering on her wrist.

She noticed me looking at it and deliberately touched it.

I sat at Table Nineteen without complaint.

That disturbed Nathan far more than anger would have.

Throughout dinner, he repeatedly looked across the ballroom.

Shortly after nine, he stepped onto the stage.

He thanked investors, employees, mentors, and Sienna.

He did not thank me.

Then he announced that Sienna would join the executive leadership team the following quarter.

Applause followed.

Nathan waited.

His eyes found mine.

“Growth requires change, professionally and sometimes personally.”

The room quieted.

“Catherine and I have shared many years together, but our lives have gradually moved in different directions.”

That was how he described twelve years of marriage.

Then he looked toward Sienna.

“Tonight is about the future.”

She smiled.

Only then did I understand that Nathan was publicly announcing the end of our marriage before discussing it privately with me.

He did not merely want freedom.

He wanted replacement to look like victory.

Sienna walked onto the stage and kissed his cheek while hundreds of guests watched.

Then she took the microphone.

“Sometimes the bravest decision is accepting when something has completed its purpose.”

She looked directly at me.

“Catherine has contributed to Nathan’s journey in ways I know everyone appreciates.”

I stood.

For one wonderful second, both of them thought I was leaving.

Instead, I walked toward the stage.

Nathan stepped down.

“Catherine, not here.”

I met his eyes.

“You chose here.”

He briefly caught my wrist.

“Let go of me.”

He did immediately.

Sienna still held the microphone.

I extended my hand.

After a moment, she surrendered it.

I faced the ballroom.

I could have exposed everything.

Instead, I remembered something my father used to say: never spend leverage merely because anger makes spending it satisfying.

“Nathan is correct about one thing.”

The room became completely still.

“Tonight is about the future, which is why tomorrow’s nine o’clock board meeting has been moved to eight.”

The chief financial officer went pale.

Nathan stared at me.

“What board meeting?”

I turned toward him.

“Apparently, the one nobody thought necessary to mention to you.”

Then I handed the microphone back to Sienna.

“Enjoy the bracelet.”

The color disappeared from her face.

Part 5 — Fifty-Two Percent

At 7:41 the following morning, I entered Bennett Aldridge Capital’s headquarters.

Dana was already inside the boardroom with outside counsel, two forensic accountants, the chief financial officer, corporate counsel, and six directors.

Sienna arrived at 7:56.

Nathan entered three minutes later.

A folder waited at his chair.

SPECIAL MEETING OF THE BOARD — SHAREHOLDER NOTICE.

Nathan looked at Dana.

“Who called this meeting?”

“Prescott Meridian Holdings.”

He leaned back.

“Catherine does not represent Prescott Meridian.”

Nobody moved.

Dana opened the corporate register.

“When Henry Prescott died, control passed under the Prescott succession trust to the designated successor voting authority.”

Nathan slowly looked at me.

Dana continued.

“That voting authority is Catherine Prescott Bennett.”

Nathan’s face hardened.

“You told me professionals managed the trust.”

“They do. They report to me.”

His voice became quieter.
