I acknowledged hearing her, but Paige seemed disappointed by my restraint. She explained that Lucas had ended their relationship and blamed her for losing his children, career, and family.

One year after the discovery, Lucas attended our daughter’s school performance alone. He looked thinner and less polished than the manager who once measured his worth through titles and bonuses. After the program, he approached while the children collected their belongings backstage.

He asked about them, and I confirmed they were thriving. Then he complimented the stability I had maintained, acknowledged that his relationship with Paige had ended, and paused before speaking again.

“I betrayed you and then blamed you, Paige, and my job whenever admitting the truth became uncomfortable. I do not expect forgiveness, but I finally understand that every important loss began with my choices.”

For the first time, his apology contained no excuse and requested no reward. I felt neither renewed affection nor the anger that once tightened my chest, only a quiet distance that confirmed how far I had traveled.

“I hope you become a better father than the husband you chose to be, because our children still deserve the most honest version of you.”

Lucas nodded and promised to keep trying. When the children ran toward us, we both smiled for their sake before leaving through different doors.
