“Remove The Wedding Dress,” My Millionaire Husband Ordered. “This Marriage Was Never About Love.” He Had Married Me To Punish My Father—But When Dad Stormed Into Our Home Demanding More Money, My Husband Stepped Between Us And Said, “You Will Never Use My Wife Again.”

Part 2 of 3

Clara set down her cup with deliberate precision.

“If we disappear after a secretive wedding, every financial reporter will investigate whether Richard exchanged me for debt relief. If you genuinely want to humiliate him, people must believe I chose you willingly and transferred my loyalty without regret.”

Julian studied her with new caution.

“You have considered this more carefully than I expected.”

“I survived twenty-seven years as the daughter of a professional fraudster, so anticipating manipulation became necessary rather than impressive.”

That evening, they entered the museum beneath hundreds of camera flashes. Clara wore a deep sapphire gown, while Julian kept one hand securely around her waist. When a prominent fashion editor approached, Clara looked at him with perfectly convincing affection.

“Once Julian finally proposed, waiting another moment seemed completely unreasonable.”

Julian adapted immediately by lifting her hand toward his lips.

“Patience has never been my greatest strength whenever Clara is involved.”

Photographs of that exchange spread across social media before dinner ended, quickly replacing speculation about debt with stories of unexpected romance. While they danced beneath the illuminated glass ceiling, Clara noticed her father standing near the ballroom entrance.

Richard’s tuxedo was wrinkled, his eyes appeared bloodshot, and his unsteady posture suggested he had been drinking. Julian’s hand tightened around Clara’s waist.

“Would you like security to remove him before he creates a scene?”

Clara watched the man who had traded her future to preserve his reputation.

“Continue dancing, because helpless observation will punish him more effectively.”

They turned slowly across the floor while Richard remained outside their orbit. For the first time, he appeared to understand that his daughter was no longer waiting to be positioned upon his financial chessboard.

Part 3: A Father Demanding His Investment Back

Several days later, Richard forced his way into the Back Bay penthouse after shoving past Julian’s young assistant. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Clara had adopted immediately began barking from beneath a marble console.

“Where is that ungrateful daughter who blocked every telephone number I used?”

Clara closed her book and calmly stroked the dog, whom she had named Winston.

“Finding me clearly required more effort than manipulating me did.”

Richard struck the glass coffee table with his palm.

“Your husband has foreclosed upon my Cape Cod estate, and his attorneys ordered me to leave before tomorrow afternoon.”

“Ashford Capital merely reclaimed property securing a defaulted loan.”

“Transfer one hundred thousand dollars into my account, or I shall tell every newspaper that this marriage is a fraudulent contract and you were sold to protect me from prosecution.”

Before Clara could respond, Julian’s voice emerged from the private elevator.

“Contact whichever newspaper you prefer, and discover how seriously reporters treat an indicted fraudster.”

Richard immediately adopted an artificial smile.

“Julian, this disagreement remains a private misunderstanding between family members.”

“You entered my residence without permission and attempted to blackmail my wife.”

Julian stopped several feet away, his expression dangerously controlled.

“Threaten Clara again, and my attorneys will dismantle whatever remains of your company before I personally deliver every concealed record to federal investigators.”

Richard turned toward Clara with drunken bitterness.

“You think this man loves you? He married you because I forced you into his bed to save myself.”

Julian answered before Clara could defend herself.

“Her reasons for marrying me do not concern you anymore.”

Something unexpected moved through Clara’s chest when she recognized the absolute protection in his voice. Richard saw it as well, and the realization finally drove him toward the elevator without another demand.

That night, Clara found Julian drinking whiskey alone beside the darkened bar. Winston, whom Julian had called an intolerable creature that morning, slept comfortably across one of his expensive slippers.

“You were not obligated to protect me from Richard.”

Julian rotated the glass between his hands.

“I spent years imagining how satisfying his humiliation would become. However, when he looked at you tonight, he saw no daughter deserving protection, only an investment that had escaped his control.”

He raised his eyes, allowing remorse to replace hostility.

“I suddenly realized that I had treated you in precisely the same unforgivable manner.”

“Please do not offer me pity because you have discovered a conscience.”

“This is not pity, Clara, because I am admitting that I regret what I did.”

Three days later, Julian arranged for his private aircraft to take them away from the city. They traveled to his secluded mountain estate near Stowe, Vermont, hoping distance would silence the reporters and Richard’s threats.

Neither anticipated the historic blizzard moving toward the mountains.

Part 4: The Night Revenge Lost Its Meaning

The snowstorm arrived shortly after their aircraft landed, burying roads beneath heavy drifts and damaging power lines throughout the region. Julian’s estate retained electricity through emergency generators, but cellular service and internet access disappeared. Rescue helicopters remained grounded because violent winds made approaching the isolated property impossible.

During their first evening, Clara complained of exhaustion and chills. By morning, a severe influenza infection had developed into acute pneumonia, and she collapsed before reaching the living room sofa.

Julian caught her before her head struck the floor. Her skin burned beneath his hands, while her breathing had become shallow and frighteningly uneven.

“Clara, open your eyes and tell me whether you can hear my voice.”

The storm prevented medical personnel from reaching them, so Julian followed emergency instructions stored inside the property’s medical system. He activated additional heaters, monitored Clara’s temperature, administered the available medication, and placed cool compresses across her forehead. Throughout the night, he encouraged her to drink small amounts of water while sitting beside the bed.

Fever carried Clara through disordered dreams in which Owen asked why she had been selected to pay for Richard’s crimes. Sometimes she heard Julian calling her name, although his voice sounded distant beneath the wind surrounding the house.

“You cannot leave me after I brought you here, because I will never forgive myself.”

By the fifth morning, Clara’s temperature finally began falling. When she opened her eyes, Julian slept awkwardly in an armchair beside her, with several days of beard shadow covering his face and exhaustion darkening the skin beneath his eyes.

Her small movement awakened him immediately, and relief transformed his entire expression.

“You are awake, and your fever has finally broken.”

“You somehow look considerably worse than your patient.”

Julian helped her sit upright before offering warm water.

“Did you remain inside this room throughout the entire storm?”

“When your temperature reached one hundred and four degrees, leaving seemed impossible.”

He placed the glass aside and stared at his clasped hands.
