Part 2 of 3

“Because Nick told her you wanted to clear out your closet before the baby came.”

I stared at the wall.

“He told her that?”

“He also told her to sell the more expensive items first.”

The room seemed suddenly too quiet.

“Why?”

Elaine took a breath.

“Tara says Nick asked her to give him half the proceeds. He told her he had a credit card payment due Monday.”

I looked toward the hallway.

Nick was downstairs making coffee.

“What credit card?”

“That’s what I intend to ask my son.”

PART 2 — WHAT THE GREEN DRESS REVEALED

Elaine and Frank arrived at our house shortly after two that afternoon.

I opened the door expecting a small bag of recovered clothes.

Instead, Frank was carrying three large shopping bags, and Elaine had another draped over her arm.

“Before you say anything,” she told me, “some of this is from us. You shouldn’t have to do laundry every night just to get through your remaining shifts.”

She set the bags on the couch and began taking out maternity scrubs, comfortable pants, soft shirts, and two sweaters.

Everything was new.

I looked at the price tags.

“Elaine, you didn’t have to do this.”

“I know. I wanted to.”

Frank smiled.

“Your mother-in-law has been shopping like she’s preparing a whole maternity ward.”

For the first time since coming home from work the previous day, I laughed.

Then Frank brought in the second bag.

Inside were the clothes Tara had returned.

He carefully removed the sage-green dress, still on its original hanger, and held it out to me.

I touched the fabric.

It was exactly as I remembered it.

Unworn. Unaltered. Mine.

Elaine handed me an envelope containing $310 and a handwritten note from Tara.

The note apologized for selling the clothes and acknowledged that she should have checked with me directly instead of relying on Nick’s explanation.

Elaine explained that Tara was arranging refunds for buyers whose items could be recovered. The money in the envelope was an initial repayment, not a claim that everything had been resolved.

“She was wrong to sell your things,” Elaine said. “She knows that. But there’s more you need to hear.”

Nick came downstairs as she spoke.

He stopped when he saw his parents.

“What’s going on?”

Elaine turned toward him.

“Sit down, Nicholas.”

He frowned.

“Mom, if this is about the clothes, Claire’s making it sound worse than it was.”

Frank pulled out a chair.

“Sit down.”

Nick looked at me.

“You called my parents over this?”

I met his eyes.

“I called your mother because you refused to help me get my belongings back.”

He sat reluctantly.

Elaine took out her phone.

“Tara agreed to explain what happened on camera so there wouldn’t be another argument about who said what.”

Nick’s face changed.

“Why would you record her?”

“Because I wanted everyone to hear the same account.”

She played the video.

Tara was sitting at her kitchen table, looking miserable.

“Nick told me Claire wanted to get rid of her maternity clothes,” she said. “He said she’d bought too much and wanted some money back before the baby came.”

The recording continued.

“He told me to list the expensive things first. I thought it was weird, but he said Claire had agreed. Then he asked if I could send him half because he had a credit card payment due.”

Elaine stopped the video.

Nick was staring at the table.

“Is that true?” she asked.

He rubbed his forehead.

“It’s not that simple.”

Frank leaned forward.

“Then explain the complicated part.”

Nick looked at me.

“I was going to put the money back.”

“What money?” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Nick, what credit card?”

His eyes moved toward his mother.

“Can we talk about this privately?”

“You had plenty of chances to talk privately,” I said. “Yesterday, you told me I was being unreasonable. Now I want the truth.”

He took out his phone, opened his banking application, and turned the screen toward me.

There was a credit card account I had never seen.

The balance was several thousand dollars.

I looked at the transactions, trying to understand what I was seeing.

There were payments to online wagering services, cash advances, and repeated transfers from our checking account.

My stomach tightened.

“How long has this been going on?”

Nick swallowed.

“Since spring.”

“Since spring?”

“It started small. I thought I could win back what I’d lost.”

Frank closed his eyes.

Elaine sat very still.

I scrolled through the transactions.

The amounts weren’t all large, but there were so many of them. Some were dated just days after Nick and I had discussed our maternity-leave budget.

I remembered him telling me groceries had become more expensive. I remembered him asking whether we could postpone buying the nursery dresser. I remembered agreeing to work extra shifts because I wanted us to have a cushion before Nora arrived.

All that time, money had been disappearing from our account.

“You told me we couldn’t afford the dresser,” I said.

Nick looked ashamed.

“I know.”

“You watched me pick up extra shifts.”

“I was trying to fix it before you found out.”

“By selling my clothes?”

He didn’t answer.

Elaine leaned forward.

“Nicholas, your wife is eight months pregnant. She needs those clothes for work. What were you thinking?”

“I wasn’t thinking straight.”

“No,” Frank said quietly. “You were thinking about keeping her from finding out.”

Nick covered his face.

For a moment, I wanted to comfort him.

It was an old instinct. Whenever something went wrong, I tried to find the most practical way to make it better.

But I couldn’t make this better for him.

Not this time.

“I need you to leave,” I said.

Nick looked up.

“Claire, please.”

“I need you to stay with your parents for now.”

“We’re having a baby in a month.”

“I know exactly when we’re having a baby. I’m the one carrying her.”

My voice shook, but I kept going.

“I can’t spend the next four weeks wondering what else you’re hiding while I’m trying to get ready for our daughter.”

He looked at Elaine.

She didn’t rescue him.

“You can stay with us,” she said. “But you’re going to tell the truth about the debt, and you’re going to get help.”

Before Nick left, we agreed on immediate steps.

He would disclose the accounts and debts I didn’t know about, stop using our shared funds for wagering, and work with a qualified counselor. We would also arrange a realistic repayment plan for the missing clothing and household money.

I contacted the bank to review our joint accounts and protect the funds needed for essential expenses. I also sought financial advice about the debts and our options.

Nick packed a suitcase that evening.

When he reached the front door, he turned around.
