Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s ‘secret weapon’ set to provide lifeline as major setback looms

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may soon find themselves at a crossroads as their high-profile deal with Netflix appears to be drawing to a close. However, a surprising ally within the streaming giant could offer the couple a much-needed boost.

Recent reports suggest Netflix is unlikely to renew its multi-million-dollar contract with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The pair initially signed with the platform in 2020 through their Archewell Productions company, shortly after stepping away from royal duties and relocating to the United States.

While their docuseries delivered one of Netflix’s biggest documentary premieres, other Archewell projects failed to spark much audience interest. As a result, insiders claim Netflix has opted not to open talks about extending the current agreement.

Still, there’s a glimmer of hope. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos is believed to remain a strong supporter of the couple — especially Meghan — and may ultimately influence the company’s decision. According to journalist Alison Boshoff, “Ted Sarandos remains a huge fan, of Meghan’s in particular, and his support is a powerful secret weapon.”

This could be especially encouraging for Meghan, who is said to be eager to develop a third season of her lifestyle series With Love, Meghan. Although the first season debuted in March and failed to break into Netflix’s top 300 shows for the first half of 2025, a second season is still slated for release later this year.

Boshoff noted, “There will be a third series of the Duchess’s lifestyle show With Love, Meghan, if she wants to make one. And I hear she does.”

New “First Look” Deal on the Table?

Even if their main deal isn’t renewed, Harry and Meghan may still remain connected to Netflix through a separate “first look” agreement for future independent projects. Under such an arrangement, the streaming giant would get priority access to consider any new content from the couple.

Prince Harry is reportedly looking to focus on new documentary series, with themes likely centering on mental health and environmental issues — areas he has long been passionate about.

Despite these potential opportunities, not everything looks promising. Two of Archewell’s upcoming ventures — a romantic comedy adaptation of Meet Me At The Lake and a reimagining of Great Expectations — are said to be in a state of uncertainty and may never move forward.

Compounding the situation, Meghan’s first season of With Love, Meghan reportedly drew just 5.3 million views, ranking it at number 383 on Netflix — a modest performance that aligns with older titles like season two of Peaky Blinders (2014) and season four of Suits (2011), the legal drama where Meghan previously starred.

Exploring New Partnerships Beyond Netflix

As speculation grows around the likely expiration of their current contract, some industry voices believe Harry and Meghan may begin exploring other platforms.

Entertainment expert Nick Ede told Hello, “The end of the current Netflix contract between Meghan and Harry means that they are now open to offers from other streamers they haven’t worked with, like Amazon Prime, so potentially they may want to court those other streamers.”
