Reason King Charles is ‘currently less irritated with Harry than William’ despite ‘rift’

Prince Harry’s unexpected meeting with King Charles at Clarence House has sent royal watchers into a frenzy, raising fresh questions about the state of the monarch’s relationship with his eldest son, Prince William.

According to royal biographer Tina Brown, the reunion may have reignited tensions between the King and the Prince of Wales, potentially reshaping family dynamics within the monarchy.

A Strain Between Father and Son

Writing on her Fresh Hell Substack, Brown — author of The Palace Papers — suggested that William and his father are facing a growing rift, particularly as Charles appears to be extending an olive branch to Harry.

As long reported, the relationship between William and his younger brother remains deeply fractured. Now, Brown argues, William’s heavy workload and his image as a devoted father could be inadvertently fueling friction with the King.

She claims Charles feels “criticised” by William’s affectionate parenting style, interpreting it as a subtle reminder of his own “shortcomings” as a father in the past.

“The King Is Less Irritated with Harry Than with William”

Reflecting on Harry’s latest trip to the UK — which included a visit to Queen Elizabeth II’s grave, attending the WellChild Awards, and making generous charitable donations — Brown noted that the monarch’s irritation may now be directed elsewhere.

“The king is, I am told, currently less irritated with the prodigal Harry than he is with his elder son and heir,” she wrote. “Somehow, William’s parenting dedication always seems couched as a tacit criticism of the king’s own paternal deficiencies.”

Brown also pointed out the contrast in their public duties: “After five confirmed family vacations in the past seven months, William’s first-week-back diary pulsated with two outings—a father-daughter excursion to a Women’s Rugby World Cup pool match and a stroll through the Natural History Museum’s new gardens. Charles, despite his battle with cancer, has carried out official engagements on 175 days during the past 12 months.”

“Prince Harry Has Finally Got It Right”

Tina Brown believes Harry’s latest behavior marks a notable shift. “At last, Prince Harry has got it right, which is bad news for the Prince of Wales,” she remarked. “After five years of exuding choler and wrath and spouting therapeutic gibberish, the ginger whinger finally realised that all the royals have to do to win public enthusiasm is zip around the UK and smile.”

She highlighted Harry’s recent efforts to repair his public image and his relationship with his father, pointing to his £1.1 million personal donation to the Children in Need project. According to Brown, this move has been “a positivity campaign” designed to “endear him to his still estranged father and a negative British public.”

Questions Over Prince William’s Role

Harry’s generosity, Brown said, “cannily unleashed for William the uneasy question of what exactly the 43-year-old Prince of Wales is doing with the £23 million a year.” The comment underscores growing public curiosity about William’s workload compared to his father’s.

Following his private reunion with the King, Harry has kept quiet, simply telling reporters, “Yes, he’s great, thank you,” when asked about his father’s health.

As Charles and Harry appear to move toward reconciliation, many are now wondering whether this renewed closeness could leave William feeling sidelined — and whether the balance of the royal family is quietly beginning to shift once again.
