Prince William Lays Out His Plan for the Monarchy and It’s Exactly What Harry Wants: ‘I’m Trying…’

Prince William is reportedly striving to break away from the shadow of King Charles and define a legacy of his own.

As the future monarch, the Prince of Wales is focused on modernizing the British royal family by embracing a leadership style rooted in empathy and relevance.

His evolving approach bears a striking resemblance to that of his brother, Prince Harry, who has also been vocal about the need for greater empathy in leadership.

A More Modern and Relatable Monarchy

During a conversation with reporters following his late 2024 trip to South Africa, William offered insight into how he envisions his role. According to The Telegraph, he explained, “I can only describe what I’m trying to do, and that’s I’m trying to do it differently and I’m trying to do it for my generation… to give you more understanding around it, I’m doing it with maybe a smaller R in the royal, if you like, that’s maybe a better way of saying it.”

In essence, William is signaling a move away from traditional royal formalities, which he says don’t reflect his personal values. “I’m going to throw empathy in there… And I think we could do with some more empathetic leadership around the world,” he added, making clear that emotional intelligence and compassion are central to the kind of leadership he hopes to embody.

Shifting Priorities for the Future King

The Prince believes that certain timeworn royal customs no longer serve the needs of a modern society. “It’s more about impact, philanthropy, collaboration, convening, and helping people,” he said, emphasizing a shift in focus from symbolic gestures to meaningful action.

Sources close to the royal household also shared with The Telegraph that William has put considerable thought into the kind of King he hopes to become. Rather than leaning on ceremonial traditions like ribbon-cutting, he aims to make a tangible difference—especially in local communities—by raising funds and promoting real change.

Alongside his wife, Princess Catherine, he’s reportedly chosen to dedicate their efforts to a more select group of causes, diverging from the broader scope embraced by previous generations.

A Shared Vision with Prince Harry

Although the royal brothers remain estranged, William’s emphasis on empathy parallels Prince Harry’s recent comments. Speaking at The Diana Award ceremony on May 6, Harry celebrated young leaders for demonstrating values he believes the world needs more of. As The Mirror reported, he said, “From a younger generation standpoint, in an apathetic world, there’s more empathy in this generation than I’ve ever seen before… It’s the empathy, the authenticity, the truth, the honesty, and the fearlessness…”

The Diana Award, established in memory of their mother, Princess Diana, encourages youth leadership and aims to inspire businesses to support young changemakers.

Leading Without Permission

In a further echo of his brother’s evolving royal philosophy, Harry remarked, “This generation isn’t waiting for permission to lead – they are already doing it… What sets them apart is… their refusal to settle for the status quo… If we’re serious about a better future, we need to stop underestimating them and start listening.”

Though the two brothers seem to share similar values when it comes to the future of leadership, their personal relationship remains strained. Reports suggest the rift between them has not yet healed, and insiders claim that William has no plans to include Harry in his eventual coronation ceremony.

As Prince William prepares for his future role, his aim to modernize the monarchy with empathy, action, and authenticity stands in contrast to traditional royal expectations. Whether or not this brings him closer to his brother remains to be seen, but both men appear united—at least ideologically—when it comes to reimagining leadership for a new generation.
