Princess Kate Middleton pulls out of Royal Ascot appearance at last minute

Kate Middleton has decided not to attend Royal Ascot today, with reports suggesting the Princess of Wales is feeling “disappointed” by the decision.

The 43-year-old royal was expected to make an appearance at the horse racing event on Wednesday, June 18, alongside members of the royal family, including Prince William. However, as she continues to focus on her recovery from cancer, Kate has chosen to sit out the event.

Balancing Health and Duty

After revealing in January 2025 that she was in remission, Kate has been gradually easing back into public life, carefully managing her schedule to support her well-being.

Though she had originally been listed as part of the traditional carriage procession with Prince William, Royal Ascot later confirmed she would not be attending. A revised carriage lineup was subsequently released.

Despite her absence, Prince William is still expected to be present at the event, along with King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Royal Insider has reached out to Kensington Palace for comment.

Kate was last seen in public on Monday, June 16, during the Order of the Garter ceremony at Windsor Castle. Just days earlier, she participated in Trooping the Colour, the King’s official birthday celebration, appearing with other senior royals.

Though she has resumed some royal duties, Kate is said to be taking things slowly, mindful of finding the right balance between her health and her public role.

Kate’s Journey with Cancer

The Princess of Wales first disclosed her cancer diagnosis in March 2024, following months of public speculation about her absence after Christmas Day 2023. She subsequently stepped back from royal responsibilities to focus on treatment.

In a statement shared in January after entering remission, Kate said: “It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focused on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal.”

She added: “I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”

Earlier, in September, Kate reflected on the emotional toll the diagnosis had taken on her family, sharing: “The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown.”

While her absence at Ascot may be disappointing to many, her careful and steady approach to returning to public life underscores the seriousness with which she’s prioritizing her recovery.
