Queen Camilla admits ‘sadness’ for her and King Charles amid Italy trip

In this article, we’re shifting gears to highlight the bittersweet end of a memorable royal visit — one that Queen Camilla called “very sad” to leave behind. She and King Charles wrapped up their state trip to Italy, expressing heartfelt emotions as they prepared to return home.

At 76 and 77 respectively, King Charles and Queen Camilla spent the past few days exploring various Italian cities during an official visit. One of the highlights included a meaningful meeting with Pope Francis, who is currently recovering from double pneumonia.

Their visit concluded on Thursday (April 10), and both royals reflected on their experience — a trip that also coincided with their 20th wedding anniversary.

A Royal Farewell to Italy

Speaking about their final day in Italy, Queen Camilla shared with PEOPLE, “We’re having a wonderful visit. We’re very sad to be going home.” The sentiment echoed the warmth and joy the couple seemed to experience throughout the trip.

While visiting Rome and Ravenna, King Charles and Queen Camilla participated in various engagements, including a formal banquet at the Palazzo Quirinale hosted by Italian President Sergio Mattarella. During the visit, King Charles also made history by becoming the first British monarch to address a joint session of the Italian Parliament.

Throughout the visit, the royal couple received an enthusiastic reception from the public. Crowds gathered in the streets to catch a glimpse of them, making their presence in Italy truly memorable.

Celebrating a Milestone: 20 Years of Marriage

As the couple dined at the state banquet — on the very day of their 20th anniversary — King Charles made a lighthearted remark in his speech:

“Today marks the queen’s and my twentieth wedding anniversary. On that score, I must say it really is very good of you, Mr. President, to lay on this small romantic, candle-lit dinner for two…!”

The couple originally tied the knot in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall on April 9, 2005. Celebrating such a milestone in a setting as romantic as Italy added a special layer to the state visit.

A New Confidence in the King

According to body language expert Darren Stanton, King Charles appeared more self-assured than ever. Speaking on behalf of Betfair Casino, Stanton commented:

“The king’s speech was very smooth and assured. His voice tone was constant and there were no breaks or cracks, no pitch changes. I really think he came off as though he is the most confident he has ever been.”

He added that the mood between the British royals and Italian officials was warm and genuine:

“It was clear that everyone was getting on very well. The genuine happiness from the king and queen was reciprocated by all of the Italian delegates.”

From heartfelt moments to historic speeches, the visit was clearly a success — one that left the royal couple with lasting memories and, as Camilla said, a touch of sadness as they said their goodbyes.
