John Goodman hospitalized after film set injury

Hollywood icon John Goodman, 72, was recently hospitalized following an unexpected accident on set, leading to a temporary pause in production on his latest film alongside Tom Cruise.

Incident on Set

The accident took place at Pinewood Studios in the UK, where Goodman reportedly sustained a hip injury after a sudden fall while blocking a scene.

Despite being in his seventies, Goodman remains an active force in Hollywood, currently filming a new project with Cruise. The film, tentatively titled Judy, is directed by Oscar-winner Alejandro González Iñárritu and features Cruise in the role of a powerful figure on a mission to save humanity. Having been in production for nearly two months, the sci-fi thriller is slated for release in October 2026.

Though one might assume that Tom Cruise—famous for his daring stunts—was involved in the accident, it was Goodman who required medical attention. The exact details of the injury remain unclear, but reports indicate it was not related to any stunt work.

According to The Mirror, Goodman was transported to the hospital, but he is expected to recover quickly. A Warner Bros. Pictures spokesperson reassured fans, stating:

“He received immediate medical attention that led to a brief delay in shooting to allow him time to recover. The production resumes shooting next week following John’s full recovery.”

A Highly Anticipated Film

Judy has drawn significant attention not just for its star power, with Goodman and Cruise in leading roles, but also for its impressive ensemble cast, which includes Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, and Sophie Wilde.

For Cruise, this film marks a major return to Warner Bros. Discovery, as it is his first project with the studio in a decade, following 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow. The actor has been on a streak of blockbuster hits, including Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and Top Gun: Maverick. With Judy shaping up to be another high-profile sci-fi thriller, anticipation continues to build.

John Goodman’s Health Journey

Throughout his career, John Goodman has been open about his struggles with depression, anxiety, and alcohol addiction. After losing his father at the age of two, he battled panic attacks and turned to alcohol, at times even drinking on set during the height of Roseanne’s success. However, in 2007, with the support of his wife, he entered rehab and has remained sober ever since.

In addition to overcoming addiction, Goodman also prioritized his physical health. Once weighing nearly 400 pounds, he worked with trainer Mackie Shilstone to adopt a healthier lifestyle. He quit alcohol, embraced regular exercise, and committed to a Mediterranean-based diet consisting of fish, nuts, olive oil, vegetables, and fruit. His dedication to long-term, sustainable weight loss resulted in him shedding over 100 pounds.

“This didn’t happen overnight — it’s been an ongoing process,” Shilstone told The New York Post. “There needs to be strategic planning. This time, he wanted to do it.”

A Difficult Year for Goodman

2024 has already been a challenging year for the veteran actor. His recent on-set accident follows another personal setback—just months ago, his Pacific Palisades home was destroyed in a fire.

Fans are hoping for a swift recovery as Goodman continues to push through these difficult times.
