RFK Jr. on fast food and his ‘Make America healthy again’ platform

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has officially taken on the role of Health and Human Services Secretary following Senate confirmation—a move expected to bring significant policy shifts.

In his speeches, Kennedy has repeatedly emphasized the importance of nutrition in overall health. His primary focus includes reducing *“the dominance of ultra-processed foods”* and eliminating *“food additives and chemicals.”*

Many believe that several widely used food additives could soon come under scrutiny, with the possibility of bans being introduced. Kennedy has been particularly outspoken about artificial dyes like Red Dye 40 and Yellow No. 5, criticizing their prevalence in the U.S. food supply.

Despite concerns about food additives, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made it clear that he does not support outright bans on any specific foods.

During an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, when asked which food additives he would remove from the U.S. market, RFK Jr. emphasized the importance of personal freedom. “If you want to eat Twinkies, you ought to be able to eat them,” he said.

However, he did pledge to implement “radical transparency” in educating the public about food ingredients and their potential health risks.

RFK Jr. also stressed the importance of providing healthier choices in schools and criticized the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for encouraging the consumption of processed foods and sugary beverages. “We shouldn’t be subsidizing people to eat poison,” he stated.

RFK Jr. Links Fast Food Additives to Lower Life Expectancy

Speaking with host Steve Gruber in September 2024, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. connected artificial food dyes commonly found in fast food to reduced life expectancy.

Regarding fast food chains like McDonald’s, he suggested they revert to their original method of frying potatoes in beef tallow instead of seed oils. He believes seed oils are “one of the most unhealthy ingredients in foods and the reason they’re in the foods is because they are heavily subsidized,” adding that they contribute to inflammation.
